YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Following a week of strong training, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will return to the course this Friday, Sept. 30, at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The race marks the toughest of the season thus far, as a number of nationally-ranked teams will be in attendance.
"We are looking forward to the Notre Dame race, as several other of our key athletes will join our competitive team effort," explained Head Coach John Goodridge. "2015 MAC Champion Nick Raymond will make his season debut, and Csaba Matko will race hard, as I had him use the Spartan Invitational as a controlled training pace effort. We have trained very well since our meet in East Lansing, and are making good progress."
At the Spartan Invitational, Sept. 14, the Eagles ran their way to a second-place team finish with a total of 42 points. A total of seven EMU harriers made their season debuts at the race, including redshirt junior team captain Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge). Andresson had a fantastic season-opening race, clocking in at 25:00 to finish fourth out of more than 400 runners. For his efforts, he was awarded Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week honors, Sept. 20.
Junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) also nabbed a spot in the top-10, crossing the finish line in 25:11 to take eighth. A pair of Eagles finished the race with times under 26 minutes, as redshirt junior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance) and senior John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y. – Gloversville) clocked in at 25:23 and 25:49, respectively.
This week's race in South Bend features a number of very tough teams, including No. 9 Eastern Kentucky, No. 20 Mississippi, No. 23 NC State, No. 24 Washington State, No. 30 Texas, and No. 30 Florida State. Providence, Southern Utah, Texas A&M, and Illinois, who are all receiving votes in the national poll, will be in attendance as well.
The meet will be held at Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course, and five races will take place on the day. The event will begin at 2 p.m. with the women's 5,000-meter blue division race, and will be followed by the men's five-mile blue divison race at 2:45 p.m, which the Eagles will take part in. After that, the open race will take place at 3:30 p.m. From there, the day will conclude with the women's gold division 5,000-meter run at 4:15 p.m., and the men's gold division five-mile run at 5 p.m.
