Despite the loss, EMU clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't find enough offense in a 4-2 defeat to the University of Toledo Thursday afternoon, May 19, at Scott Park. Despite the defeat, the Eagles (20-32, 10-12 MAC) clinched a top-eight seed and a spot in the MAC Tournament.
The highlight of the day came from senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), who smacked his team-best 12th home run of the season. It was the 31st of his career, putting him all alone in fifth on the all-time EMU list. He also drew two walks on the day. Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) collected his team best 17th multi-hit game with a single and a double, his team-leading 11th two-bagger.
It was another solid day from the pitching staff, as two hurlers combined for the eight innings of work. Senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) took the loss after going 5.2 innings with four runs and three strikeouts. In relief, freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) finished the last 2.1 innings, surrendering just one hit. It was his third straight scoreless appearance.
The Eagles almost plated a run in the first inning when, on a double from Williams, McGeein was sent home, but he was gunned out on a close play at the plate. Toledo then turned around and scored a run of their own on an RBI single, giving the Rockets the 1-0 advantage early on.
After a clean second, UT (16-36-1, 11-11 MAC) exploded for three runs in the third on four hits, extending the lead to 4-0 into the fourth inning. Marsinek settled in during the fourth, fifth and sixth, not allowing any runs and striking out a trio of Rockets. Feldman came in and wrapped up the sixth and seventh, keeping the 4-0 deficit into the eighth.
EMU finally broke through in the eighth inning, snagging a pair of runs on the McGeein two-run home run, which was a bomb to left center. His 12th of the season put the deficit at 4-2 with one more turn at the plate. After the second consecutive scoreless inning from Feldman in the eighth, EMU had one last crack in the ninth, but went one-two-three, sealing the 4-2 defeat.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow with game two of the series. First pitch against the Rockets is set for 3 p.m.
