The Eagles picked up their first win in Mount Pleasant since 2011
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a doubleheader versus Central Michigan University at Margo Jonker Stadium Saturday, April 30. A pair of home runs powered the Eagles (19-29, 9-11 MAC) to a 5-2 win in the first leg of the twin bill. In game two, the Eagles offense was held in check as Central Michigan (22-24-1, 9-10-1 MAC) downed EMU, 1-0.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 5, Central Michigan 2
Juniors Katy Wyman (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Central) and Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) powered the Eagles offense in the win. The duo registered a pair of round-trippers to pace the offense. Wyman finished the day 1-for-1 with two RBI's and a run scored while Kriegshauser finished with two RBI's and a run scored on a 2-for-3 showing.
Freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) earned the start and did not disappoint. Going the distance, Miranda turned in her 10th career complete game while allowing just two runs on four hits. The freshman hurler added two strikeouts on her way to her ninth win of the season.
Saporito drew a leadoff walk in the first at bat of the day before moving to second with her fourth stolen base of the season. She then moved to third on a wild pitch before crossing the plate on another pitch in the dirt to give EMU a 1-0 lead.
Central put the leadoff batter aboard in its half of the first but Miranda buckled down and retired the next three batters. First, inducing a ground ball, Miranda closed out the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.
Junior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) took a page out of Saporito's playbook, drawing a leadoff walk to open the third. Senior Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) entered as a pinch runner and moved into second on a sacrifice bunt. With Whitbeck standing on second, Kriegshauser dug into the batter's box and delivered with a two-run home run to left field. Clubbing her seventh homer of the season and 20th of her career, Kriegshauser pushed EMU's lead to 3-0.
A hit batter gave CMU a base runner in the third but attempting to steal on the next at bat, Wagner gunned out the runner at second to clear the bases before a pop out ended the inning. With three innings complete, EMU held a 3-0 edge.
An RBI single in the fourth put Central Michigan on the scoreboard and cut Eastern Michigan's lead to 3-1, through four innings of play.
Wagner reached base in the fifth, lacing a one-out double to the fence, to put the Eagles in position to add to their lead. After an out, Wyman stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter. Taking full advantage of her opportunity, Wyman blasted her first home run of the season over the fence in left field. A two-run shot, Wyman's round-tripper extended EMU's lead to four, 5-1. Kriegshauser kept things rolling with a stand up double, forcing a CMU pitching change. With a new pitcher in the circle, the Eagles' fifth inning rally came to a close.
The Chippewas used a hit, a pair of walks, and a hit batter to plate a run in the sixth. After a plunked batter brought in a run, Miranda refocused and induced an inning-ending fly out to Saporito in left, leaving the bases loaded.
Central came to bat in the seventh with the Eagles holding a 5-2 lead but Miranda and the Green and White defense closed the door, securing the win. The victory marked Eastern Michigan's first win in Mount Pleasant since the 2011 campaign.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 0, Central Michigan 1
Miranda got the call on the rubber match after her strong performance in the first game of the day. Turning in another complete game, Miranda allowed one run on seven hits while striking out one.
Central Michigan plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning to take the early lead and rode a 1-0 edge all the way to the seventh. Miranda and the Eagles ran into a few jams along the way but the Green and White prevailed, holding the Chippewas without any further damage. Conversely, the Eagles had their fair share of opportunities but ultimately stranded five over the first six innings.
In the seventh, sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) used her speed to reach base with an infield single. The infield single by Hostetler was wasted however, as back-to-back strikeouts ended the game, 1-0, in favor of CMU.
The Eagles close out the regular season next weekend, May 6-7, in Kalamazoo with a three-game set versus Western Michigan. The series opens with a 3 p.m. first pitch Friday, May 6, as the MAC West rivals duke it out for a spot in the conference tournament.
