CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team closed out competition at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational today, April 2. The second day of competition featured the majority of the events, with the Eagles nabbing a number of top-three finishes. As a team, the Eagles finished third with a total of 106 points.
Beginning with the sprints, redshirt junior Nick James (Troy, Ohio – Troy) took home a second-place finish in the 100m dash, crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 10.87 seconds. The other Eagle representative in the event was freshman Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Jerome), who clocked in at 12.17. James also ran in the 200m dash, finishing the race in fourth with a time of 22.58. The Green and White then took home a first-place finish in the 800m run, as graduate student Joshua Sabo (Akron, Ohio – Revere) finished in 1:55.51 to narrowly edge out a runner from Eastern Kentucky.
In the 400m hurdles, freshman Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio – Eastmoor Academy) took home another podium spot, as he nabbed bronze with a time of 57.56, just one second out from first. Moving to the jumps, freshman Nicholas Herbert (Portage, Mich. – Portage Northern) finished second in the long jump after posting a mark of 6.91 meters/ 22 feet 8.00-inches. Fellow freshmen Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) also nabbed a top-five finish, placing fifth (6.60 meters/ 21 feet 7.75-inches).
In the high jump, Hart was the top EMU finisher, coming in eighth with a mark of 1.93 meters/ 6 feet 4-inches, while fellow freshman Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) and redshirt junior Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich. – Northview) tied for ninth with a tally of 1.88 meters/ 6 feet 2-inches. Finally, in the triple jump, Herbert found more success, as he claimed a second-place finish after posting a jump of 13.94 meters/ 45 feet 8.75-inches. Just behind him, Peters took the bronze with a mark of 13.80 meters/ 45 feet 3.25-inches.
Moving to throws, Eastern snagged another gold in the javelin, as freshman Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland) dominated with a mark of 66.09 meters/ 216 feet 10-inches, which was nearly 12 meters better than the second-place finisher. The freshman posted the second-best javelin throw in EMU history. Also participating in the event was Jacobs, who finished fifth after posting a throw of 41.21 meters/ 135 feet 2-inches. In the discus, sophomore Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio – Medina) finished seventh with a personal-best throw of 47.68 meters/ 156 feet 5-inches, while junior Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio – River Valley) was just behind him in eighth.
Finally, Levering and redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville) paced the Eagles in the shot put, with Levering finishing fifth with a throw of 16.16 meters/ 53 feet 0.25-inches. Williams was just two spots behind Williams, taking seventh with a mark of 15.44 meters/ 50 feet 7.75-inches.
The Green and White will stay closer to home next weekend, as the team will make the trek to East Lansing for the Michigan State Invitational, April 8-9.
