Eagles Set New Hammer Throw Record on Second Day in California

LONG BEACH, Calif./AZUSA, Calif./NORWALK, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team competed in a trio of meets yesterday, April 14, out in California. The highlight of the day came in the weight throw at the Beach Pacific Coast Invite, where a new program record was set.
First off, the Eagles turned in a fantastic day at the Beach Pacific Coast Invite, taking home 11 top-three finishes. In the 100m dash, freshman Aitor Ekobo (Madrid, Spain - Jose Luis Lopez Aranguren Secondary School) placed third, crossing the finish line in 10.86. Junior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio – Findlay) led the Green and White in the 200m, taking gold after clocking in at 21.29. Ekobo was just behind him, nabbing seventh in 22.02.
Eastern had three runners in the mid-distance events, as redshirt sophomore Kieran Reilly (Dover, Great Britain - Dover Grammar School for Boys) finished with a time of 1:58.68 in the 800m to place 12th. One of the highlights on the day came in the 1500m, where EMU swept the top-two spots. Sophomore Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) won the event with a career-best time of 3:52.67. Redshirt sophomore Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) was hot on his tail, crossing the finish line in 3:52.04 to nab the silver.
Only one Eagle took part in the hurdles on the day, as sophomore Mark Cooke (Edison, N.J. – John P. Stevens) placed sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.00. EMU claimed another event title in the 4x100m relay, as the group of sophomore Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon), Ekobo, senior Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa. – Greater Latrobe Senior), and Brown won the gold with a time of 41.16.
EMU continued to find success in the jumps, as the team took two silvers and one bronze in the high jump and the long jump, respectively. Freshman Cameron Hart (olumbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) competed in both, nabbing second in the high jump with a mark of 1.90 meters/ 6 feet 2.75-inches and third in the long jump with a mark of 7.16 meters/ 23 feet 6-inches, which was a personal-best. Brown also competed in the long jump, taking the silver with a jump of 7.27 meters/ 23 feet 10.25-inches.
The team's most impressive finish came in the hammer throw, where a new program record was set by redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville). Williams posted a personal-best mark of 63.24 meters/ 207 feet 5.75-inches to shatter his previous program record. Just behind him, redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) took second with a mark of 62.56 meters/ 205 feet 3-inches, which now stands as second-best in the EMU record books. In the discus, junior Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio – River Valley) posted a mark of 45.62 meters/ 149 feet 8-inches, while freshman Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland) continued to have a solid start in the javelin. The freshman posted a throw of 62.01 meters/ 203 feet 5.25-inches to nab the bronze.
Wrapping up day two of the Mt SAC Combined Events, redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley) competed in the final five events of the decathlon. The redshirt senior began with the 110m hurdles, clocking in at 14.67 to finish fourth. From there, he placed fourth in the discus, notching a throw of 42.66 meters/ 139 feet 11.50-inches. In the pole vault, Simmons took fifth after posting a mark of 4.50 meters/ 14 feet 9.25-inches. His top finish on the day came in the javelin, where he nabbed the silver with a throw of 57.20 meters/ 187 feet 8-inches. Finally, the Murrieta, Calif. native finished the day with the 1500m run, nabbing another fourth-place finish after crossing the finish line in 4:52.26. Ultimately, Simmons went on to take fourth in the decathlon with a total of 7537 points.
Finally, the Eagles had one competitor run in the first day of the Mt SAC Relays, as redshirt sophomore Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge) ran in the 10000m. Andresson set a new career-best, clocking in at 29:36.71 to finish 23rd.
The Eagles resume action today, April 15, with day one of the Beach Invitational, as well as the second day of the Mt SAC Relays.
