Eagles' Rally Fall Short Against Oakland

The Eagles return to action tomorrow, April 13, in Toledo, Ohio
Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) came away with the loss, tossing 1.0 innings. Minsker issued three walks and fanned one but surrendered three runs, putting the Eagles in a hole early. Freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) entered the game in relief, striking out five over 6.0 innings of work.
At the plate, a pair of Eagles registered multi-hit games with 2-for-4 efforts. Junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) scored a run in addition to her two hits, one of which was a triple. Freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) joined Kriegshauser with two hits on the day, adding an RBI. As a team, the Eagles outhit OU 10-7.
A dreaded leadoff walk came around to score on a passed ball for the Golden Grizzlies in the opening frame before OU claimed a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.
After a quiet start to the game offensively, the Eagles broke out the bats in the bottom of the second. Senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) roped a single to left center with one out and advanced to second on an OU miscue at which point she was lifted for pinch runner Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa). Whitbeck scooted into third on a one out walk and then came around to score on an RBI single by senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange). Davidson used her speed to beat out an infield single and get the Eagles on the board. The one-run inning by the Green and White cut OU's lead to two, 3-1.
Miranda made quick work of the Golden Grizzlies in the third thanks to a highlight reel play by sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). Hostetler's diving play stopped a liner from finding the grass and robbed Oakland of extra bases. The EMU freshman hurler followed up the stout effort with a strikeout, completely fooling the OU batter with an off-speed pitch for out number three.
Kriegshauser ripped a two-out triple to the fence in center but the extra base hit was for naught as the Eagles stranded the junior at third.
With her team trailing by two, 3-1, Miranda continued to dazzle in the circle. The Wilmington, Calif. product held the Golden Grizzlies to just one hit over three innings before running into trouble in the sixth. A two-out double pushed OU's lead to 5-1 but Miranda came back with a strikeout to strand a pair of Golden Grizzlies in scoring position with the Eagles coming to bat in the sixth.
The Eagles plated three in their half of the frame courtesy of a two-out rally. Clark kick started the outburst, reaching on an error, and then scored on an RBI double off the bat of Hostetler. Junior Katy Wyman (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Central) extended the inning with a pinch hit single and senior Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) followed it up with a RBI single, to cut Oakland's edge to two, 5-3. EMU added another run on an RBI single by Logan, pulling with one, 5-4. Logan's run scoring single forced a pitching change for Oakland, ending Haley Zemmer's day in the circle. OU's relief pitcher, Laura Pond, fanned the only hitter she faced in the inning, putting an end to Eastern's rally.
Miranda issued a walk to put the leadoff hitter aboard in the seventh. The free pass came around to score on an RBI double, giving OU a coveted insurance run.
With the Golden Grizzlies looking for more, OU's Haley Zemmer crushed a ball to center field. The hard hit spelled trouble for the Eagles but Davidson covered plenty of real estate in center and ultimately laid out for the catch to end the threat and turn things over to the EMU offense.
Needing two to tie and three to win, the Eagles wasted little time jumping on OU. Senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) walked after Kriegshauser's leadoff single, putting two on with one out for sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace). Ahead in the count early, Olmos fought off four consecutive pitches before floating a single just out of the reach of OU's first baseman. Olmos' single came down in shallow right field, inches of the foul line, allowing Kriegshauser to score from second. After a fielder's choice, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs but the rally fall short as a strikeout ended the game, 6-5, in favor of Oakland.
A quick turnaround pits the Eagles against Toledo tomorrow, April 13, at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio. The season finale between the Green and White and the Rockets is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
