Junior Jeremy Stidham hit two homers on the day, including the game winner in game two
In the first game, EMU tallied six hits among six different players. Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) paced EMU with two RBI's and a home run, while Senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) tallied the other two RBI's with his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
Game two was a complete pitching performance from EMU as three combined to allow just two earned runs, striking out 11. Senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) earned the no decision after going five innings as the starter, striking out seven tying a career-high. In relief, senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) and junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) combined for two scoreless innings each, striking out two apiece as well. Delaplane got his second win of the season after the ninth inning comeback for Eastern.
Offensively, Eastern hit a pair of home runs in the second game, with Stidham going for his second of the day, fourth of the season, while senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) hit his fourth of the season as well. Stidham's won the game for Eastern, as it came in the ninth inning of a 3-3 ballgame. Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) stole three bags in the game, upping his conference leading total to 23 on the season.
Game One: Buffalo 12, Eastern Michigan 4
The Bulls (9-14, 3-2 MAC) leaped ahead in the first with four runs on five hits and an error. The Eagles tallied three hits themselves in the first two innings, but were unable to do anything with them, leading to a 4-0 deficit after two frames.
EMU got on the board in the third with a lone run. Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) led off with a single, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. He was plated by a sacrifice fly one batter later, cutting the deficit to 4-1. UB responded immediately though, getting the run back on a walk and triple in the bottom of the third.
After the third inning, Buffalo's bats began to cool with the strength of sophomore Kyle Huckaby's (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry) pitching. He went the next 2.2 innings without allowing a run, striking out one. The score remained 5-1 after five innings.
Eastern got another run back in the top of the sixth with the second RBI from Stidham, this time from his third home run of the season. Despite later getting runners to second and third later in the inning, UB tightened up, keeping the score 5-2 after six at-bats for the Eagles.
Huckaby got two more outs in the bottom of the sixth, but also allowed a pair of runners to get on, causing him to be lifted for a reliever. After a double and passed ball, Buffalo had extended the lead to 7-2 after six full innings. Buffalo's lead ballooned in the bottom of the seventh with three more runs on three hits, making it 10-2 after seven.
The Eagles sprung for a pair in the eighth inning by going deep once again. After a walk, Martin launched his team-leading sixth home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 10-4. Buffalo got the pair back in the bottom half, and EMU went quietly in the ninth, sealing the 12-4 defeat.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan 4, Buffalo 3
Eastern was first on the board in game two, getting a run in the top of the second. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) reached on an error then advanced to second. After a groundout, he came in to score on a wild pitch.
EMU doubled the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth with McGeein's solo shot, his third of the season. Gallardo remained untouched through four innings, striking out five batters in the process. After EMU left the bags loaded in the fifth, Gallardo came back out and struck out two more, tying his career-high.
Gallardo ran into some trouble in the sixth however, giving up a pair of runs on four straight hits, tying the game at two, and chasing him from the game. Marsinek came in and struck out two in relief, but one more run came around after a wild pitch and throwing error, giving UB a 3-2 lead after six.
Marsinek shut down the Bulls in the seventh, allowing EMU to tie it up in the top of the eighth. A walk, single, and sacrifice bunt allowed freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) to knock one in with an RBI groundout. The third reliever of the day, Delaplane, went scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, setting the table for the ninth.
After the first two batters grounded out, Stidham parked his second homer of the day, a long shot to left center, giving EMU the lead back, 4-3, heading into UB's final turn at-bat. Delaplane registered his second straight scoreless inning, striking out one, and sealing EMU's 4-3 win.
Eastern remains in New York for the final game of the weekend tomorrow, April 2. First pitch from Fred Handler Park is set for 3 p.m.
