Eastern Takes Weekend Series Over Buffalo with 2-1 Win

4/2/2016 5:37:00 PM | Baseball

EMU is off to its best start in MAC play since 2011

OLEAN, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up the weekend series win with a 2-1 victory over the University at Buffalo, Saturday afternoon, April 2.  The Eagles (11-15, 5-1 MAC) are out to their best start to Mid-American Conference play since 2011.

The pitching got the job done once again, with three pitchers combining to not allow an earned run.  Freshman lefty Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) upped his streak of allowing no earned runs to 21 straight after going 6.1, allowing just five hits, while striking out four.  Junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) was stout in relief, only allowing one hit in two innings.  Junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) got his second save of the season after cleaning up with one out in the ninth, striking out one.

Buffalo captured the initial lead with a run in the first on an RBI groundout.  Eastern responded in the top of the second, tying the game at one with an RBI groundout of their own, from freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern).

EMU took the lead in the top of the third with another run.  Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) ripped a single with two outs and then stole second.  He came around to score on an RBI double from Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), giving Eastern a 2-1 lead.

On the defensive side, Butzin settled in after the first inning, not allowing a run to score over the next four innings, striking out four.  After five, EMU maintained the 2-1 lead.

The Bulls threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bags with two outs, but Butzin rallied, inducing a fly out, and keeping EMU's slim lead through six innings.  The freshman was lifted in the seventh for Delaplane after an error put a runner on second base.  The righty ran into some trouble, loading the bases with a pair of walks, but he too escaped the jam after getting a foul pop out.

Delaplane then went the next 2.1 innings without giving up a run, striking out one.  He went for the save into the ninth, but ran into some trouble, allowing runners to get to first and second.  Beaton was then summoned from the pen to get the save.  He retired the next two batters with a pop out and strikeout to close the door, sealing the 2-1 win.

Eastern continues the road swing this week with mid-week contest versus in-state foe Michigan State.  First pitch from East Lansing is set for 3 p.m., Tuesday April 5.
