Michigan State entered the game leading the Big Ten Conference
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team knocked off in-state foe Michigan State University with a 4-2 win in non-conference mid-week action at McLane Stadium Tuesday afternoon, April 5. The Eagles (12-15, 5-1 MAC) trailed until the sixth before going for three runs in the final four innings.
The pitching staff was the strength once again for EMU, as they allowed just five hits, one earned, on the day. MSU (19-5, 3-0 Big Ten) entered the day with the 17th ranked team batting average in the country. Starter sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) pitched a career-high 5.2 innings, surrendering three hits and one earned run. In relief, senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) and junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) went the final 3.1 innings for EMU. Marsinek earned his first win of the season after pitching 1.1 without allowing a hit, while Delaplane got his second save of the season, ninth of his career, going the final two innings only giving up two hits.
Leading EMU offensively was senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) who had a 2-for-3 day including his first home run of the season and two of EMU's four RBI's. Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) also clubbed a homer, his fourth home run in his last six games and fifth of the season.
MSU got on the board first with a pair of runs on a pair of hits. After a line drive single, a double down the line, MSU had their first run. A sacrifice bunt and passed ball allowed the second run to score.
Eastern got one back in the top of the third with a long ball from DiLeo, his first of the season and just his second overall hit. The homer was his third of his career and first since April of 2013, also against MSU. On the bump, Mattson bounced back after the first inning, going the next four without allowing a hit and keeping the score 2-1 after five.
The ballgame evened up in the top of the sixth with yet another home run, this time from Stidham. The designated hitter launched one far over the left field fence for his fifth of the season. After six trips to the plate for EMU, the game was deadlocked 2-2.
Mattson surrendered his first hit since the leadoff batter in the sixth, and after a steal, error, and walk, runners stood at first and third with two outs, forcing head coach Mark Van Ameyde to go to the bullpen. In relief, Marsinek got the next batter to pop out, ending the threat and taking the game to the seventh still tied at two.
Marsinek getting out of the jam allowed Eastern to take the lead in the top of the seventh with a run on three hits. Junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) led off with Eastern's first non-home run hit of the game, a single to center. The next batter, DiLeo, ripped a double off of the third baseman, scoring Montgomery, giving EMU the 3-2 lead. Despite later getting runners on second and third, MSU tightened up keeping the deficit at one.
After a scoreless inning from Marsinek, Eastern doubled the lead in the top of the eighth with a run on an RBI double from redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) with two outs. After the first two batters were nixed, senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) drew a walk and came around after Mioudszewski's double down the line, putting EMU ahead 4-2.
The Spartans threatened in the bottom of the eighth when they loaded the bases with one out on EMU reliever Delaplane. After getting a fly out, Delaplane loaded up the bags with a pair of singles and a walk. The junior escaped without allowing a run to cross getting a strikeout and groundout, keeping Eastern's two-run lead into the final frame.
The Eagles went quietly in the ninth, setting the table for Delaplane in the bottom half. He was more than able to handle the Spartans, sending them down 1-2-3, to close out the 4-2 decision for the Eagles.
Eastern now turns around for a road trip to Morgantown, W. Va. to face the Mountaineers in mid-week non-conference action tomorrow, April 6. First pitch against West Virginia is set for 6:30 p.m.
