EMU only mustered three hits on the night
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a road contest to the West Virginia Mountaineers by 5-1 decision Wednesday night, April 6.
Five pitchers combined to go the distance for EMU (12-16, 5-1 MAC), with juniors Josh Bravin (Las Vegas, Nev.-Silverado (Palomar)) and Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) combining for two innings with no runs allowed. Freshman Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) also didn't allow an earned run in 1.1 innings pitched.
Offensively, EMU only mustered three hits on the night. Senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) collected one of them, and along with a pair of walks, extended his on-base streak to 19 games. He has also collected a hit in 15 of his last 16 games.
The Mountaineers (16-11, 4-4 Big 12) were first on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first on two hits. Starting pitcher senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) escaped without further damage though, striking out a batter. He got through the next inning unscathed, striking out another, while the Eagles were held hitless through the first three turns at bat.
WVU tacked on two more in the third with a two-RBI double with two outs, pushing their lead to 3-0. After Wilson walked his fourth of the game, sophomore Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry) relieved him from the pen. With the bases loaded, he induced a line-out to second, ending the threat. One more was added in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, putting the score at 4-0 after four innings.
EMU tallied their first hit in the top of the fifth, but were unable to do anything with it, keeping them off the board through five turns at-bat. Huckaby went the next inning unscathed, keeping the tally at 4-0 headed into the sixth. Another run for West Virginia was added in the sixth with an RBI double down the line, making it 5-0.
Eastern pieced together their first good offensive start in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs on two singles and a hit by pitch. After a double play that scored a run, WVU didn't allow another to cross, keeping their lead at 5-1.
EMU loaded the bags again in the eighth, this time with two outs. WVU was stout again though, getting a spectacular play from their shortstop in the gap to steal a hit and keep EMU scoreless in the frame. Going to the bottom of the eighth, WVU still led 5-1.
A shutdown inning between Bravin and Beaton kept the four-run deficit into the ninth, but a one-two-three inning sealed the deal for the Eagles.
Eastern remains on the road for its third straight road non-conference game when it heads to Valparaiso, Ind. for a single game versus the Crusaders. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT, Friday April 8.
