Eagles Come Back in Extra Innings to Defeat Purdue, 6-5

4/12/2016 7:38:00 PM | Baseball

Marquise Gill knocked in the winning run in the 10th

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a late rally in extra innings to defeat Purdue University, 6-5, in non-conference action Tuesday evening, April 12 at Alexander Field.  The Eagles (13-16, 5-1 MAC) trailed from the fourth inning until the ninth, when they tied the game.  EMU went on to win it in the 10th with a two-out single from redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) that scored the winning run.

Leading the Eagles on the mound were the relief pitchers, senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit), junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), and junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh), who combined for 4.2 scoreless down the stretch.  Delaplane got his team-leading third win of the season, as well as the 100th strikeout of his career, while Marsinek struck out two and extended his scoreless streak to 14.1 innings.

Offensively, three Eagles had multi-hit games in the 11-hit contest.  Leading EMU was freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) who finished with a career-high four hits, going 4-for-5.  Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) returned to the lineup with a 2-for-4 day, while senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) also had two hits, including a double and a walk.

The Eagles played some small ball to strike first in the second inning.  With runners on the corners following a walk and single, Schuemann dropped the first bunt, scoring a run.  An error advanced the runner to third, setting up the second squeeze bunt by redshirt freshman Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley), putting EMU ahead 2-0.

Following back-to-back singles in the bottom of the second, Purdue (4-25, 0-9 Big Ten) got a run back on an RBI groundout, scoring one.  The other runner was left stranded, keeping Eastern's lead at 2-1.

Purdue sprung for a pair more in the fourth on three hits, including a two-out bunt single, giving the Boilermakers their first lead of the afternoon, 3-2.  Despite giving up the runs, starter sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) struck out a career-high five batters through five innings.

After a scoreless fifth, Purdue struck again in the sixth after EMU miscues.  With a runner on second, Purdue laid a bunt down the third base side, and after a throwing error, the runner came around to score.  Another error on a dropped throw to first allowed a second run to score following a squeeze bunt, pushing the lead to 5-2.

EMU jumpstarted the offense in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs on a pair of hits.  The bags loaded up with no one out after two singles and a hit by pitch.  Following a strikeout, senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) knocked one in on a groundout.  That followed with a passed ball which scored Wolanski, and EMU found themselves down just one, 5-4, going into the stretch.

After a scoreless seventh and eighth for Purdue on the performances of Marsinek and Beaton, EMU was left with one last try in the top of the ninth.  The Eagles delivered with a run on a bases loaded single from Martin, tying the score at five apiece, and extending the game to the bottom of the ninth.  Delaplane tossed a scoreless ninth, sending the game to extra innings.

In the first extra frame, EMU recaptured the lead with a two-out base hit to right from Gill, scoring Schuemann.  It was EMU's first lead since the fourth inning, when the score sat at 2-1.  Heading back out for the 10th, Delaplane ran into a bit of trouble, allowing runners to reach first and second.  He stood strong though, striking out two in the inning, sealing the 6-5 victory.

Eastern gets back into action tomorrow with the battle for Washtenaw County against the Michigan Wolverines.  First pitch from Ann Arbor is set for 4 p.m.
