Eastern was hit by pitch a program record seven times
Phoenix, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a tough decision in 11 innings, 5-4 to Arizona State University Saturday night, March 5. It was the second walk-off loss for the Eagles this season.
The Eagles (4-7) once again out-hit the Sun Devils (7-3) by an 11-9 margin. The Green and White left a season-high 17 runner on base though, rendering them unable to capitalize when it counted most. The Eagles were also hit by pitch a program record seven times, including senior Jackson Martin, who was plunked three times, tying the most in a game since 1999.
Individually, Eastern had three multi-hit games, led by sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) who notched a career-high four hits. Freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich-Portage Northern) notched his first career multi-hit game, going 3-for-4. Finally, redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) collected one hit in the game, his 100th in his EMU career.
On the rubber, the star of the night was freshman starter Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) who went a stellar 5.1 innings, only allowing four hits and no earned runs. He was was tagged with the no decision however, with the game going to extras later on.
Eastern was the first team on the board in the game, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Back-to-back singles from redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) and Williams set up the RBI single opportunity for Mioduszewski. EMU tacked on another in the second, after a single and error set the table for Williams to knock one in on a single. Meanwhile, Feldman had yet to allow a hit through two, giving EMU the 2-0 lead.
The Sun Devils got one back in the third when a run came around on a throwing error, counting as an unearned run for EMU. From there, Feldman began to mow down ASU hitters, not allowing another run and only giving up four hits into the sixth. He couldn't escape the inning though, as freshman lefty Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) took over and finished it off for him. Through six, EMU out-hit ASU by an 11-4 margin, but despite that, they only led 2-1.
Things changed in the bottom of the seventh though, as ASU got the better of Butzin, tagging him for a couple of runs to take their first lead of the night. The freshman retired the first batter of the inning on a strikeout before allowing the next three to reach on two singles and a walk. Another single brought one home and a fielder's choice brought in the other. After seven, ASU led 3-2.
A scoreless eighth took things to the ninth, where EMU had one more chance. They got what they needed in the inning, getting one the hard way. Eastern got one on after a strikeout reached the backstop. After stealing second, an intentional walk, and a hit by pitch, EMU had the bases loaded with two outs. That's when Schuemann took one for the team, getting plunked on the arm and driving in the tying run. ASU didn't yield the lead though, sending things to the ninth tied up at three.
The game wound up going to extra innings thanks to some pitching heroics from righty reliever junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic). After allowing his first hit of the season, runners ended up on first and second after a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk. That's when Beaton shut down the Sun Devils, striking out the next two hitters on six pitches.
After a scoreless tenth for EMU, Beaton trotted back out, and got the same result. The first batter singled, and then advanced on a sac bunt. Beaton then once again struck out the next two batters, escaping his second inning unscathed. The game continued to the 11th.
That's when the Eagles broke through, taking a one run lead. A sophomore Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Des Moines) walk and junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) single put runners on the corners. The tie was broken on a sac fly from Gill, sending the game to the bottom of the 11th with a 4-3 EMU lead.
The third inning was not the charm for Beaton though. An error let the lead-off man on and a double drive him home. An infield single put runners on the corners, and a third hit in the inning drove in the winning run for ASU.
The weekend series concludes tomorrow, March 6 with the final game of the series. First pitch from Phoenix Municipal Stadium is set for 12:30 p.m. MT.
