Mitchell McGeein tallied his 20th career homerun

PHOENIX, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up its weekend series in Arizona with a tough 8-1 defeat to Arizona State University Sunday afternoon, March. 6.  The ballgame was tied after five innings, but ASU exploded for seven in the final three frames to coast to victory.

Eastern (4-8) could only tally three hits in the contest.  One of the hits produced their only run of the game, a solo home run from senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) his first of the season and the 20th of his career.  Meanwhile ASU (8-3) notched 11 hits in the game, including two home runs which ended up being the difference in the contest.

The game started as a pitchers dual, as the score was 1-0 in favor of ASU through four innings.  EMU had collected a lone hit, while ASU only had mustered two themselves.  In the top of the fifth McGeein tied things up with his solo jack.  A quick bottom half of the frame had the contest tied after five.

That's when EMU and starting pitcher senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) ran into trouble, allowing four runs on four hits, including a two-run homerun.  Meanwhile EMU continued to get little done at the dish, leading to ASU's 5-1 lead through seven turns at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) had a highlight frame, pitching a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts.  The good inning didn't do much for the bats however, as EMU failed to score and ASU tacked on three more in the eighth on a three-run homerun.  EMU went quietly in the ninth, sealing the 8-1 defeat.

The Eagles are back in action next weekend at the Flyer Classic in Dayton, Ohio.  The first game of the weekend will be against the Oakland University Grizzlies, Friday, March 11.  First pitch from Wright State University is set for noon.
