Eagles Drop First Game of Flyer Classic

3/11/2016 3:58:00 PM | Baseball

Senior Jackson Martin his his second home run of the season

DAYTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was downed in the first game of the Flyer Classic against Oakland University, 11-3, Friday afternoon, March 11 at Nischwitz Stadium.  The Eagles were only out-hit by one, 8-7, in the contest.

EMU (4-9) was led offensively by senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) who clubbed his second home run of the season in a 2-for-3 effort, while knocking in two of EMU's runs.  Freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich. - Portage Northern) was the only other Eagle with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 along with the other EMU RBI.  On the base paths, redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich. - Paw Paw) stole his team-leading 10th bag of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies (5-8) jumped all over EMU to begin the game, tagging the Green and White for three runs in the first on a hit and an error.  Two more were added on in the top of the third on three more hits.  Meanwhile EMU failed to get their first base runner until the bottom of the third on a Schuemann single.

EMU tacked on their first run in the bottom of the fourth on a Martin RBI double, scoring sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich. - Walled Lake Northern).  It was Williams' team-leading 10th run scored on the year.

Oakland went on to get four runs over the next three innings, extending the lead out to 9-1 after seven innings.  A two-run home run in the top of the ninth capped off the scoring for OU, giving the Golden Grizzlies an 11-1 lead.

EMU got a couple back in the ninth with Martin's solo home run and a two-out RBI single from Schuemann.  However it was not enough as EMU dropped the contest by the eight-run margin.

Eastern is back in action from Dayton tomorrow when it returns to Nischwitz to play a double-header against the host Wright State University Raiders.  First pitch of the twin bill is set for 1 p.m.
