The Eagles dropped both sides of a double header to Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a pair in double header action in day two of the Flyer Classic against the host Wright State Raiders, Saturday, March 12. WSU (10-6) took game one 14-0, while game two finished 7-5 in their favor.

GAME 1: Wright State 14, Eastern Michigan 0

EMU (4-11) managed seven hits, but left eight on base in the game one shutout. Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) went 2-for-4 in the game with a double.

WSU jumped ahead in the first inning on a lead-off single that was driven in on a double to left field. That runner was eventually stranded at third, but the Raiders had the advantage 1-0 after one.

The lead ballooned to five in the second frame as WSU went for four runs on four hits, including a solo home run. The Eagles continued to be sent down in order, only putting up one hit through three turns at the plate. Another four spot in the bottom of the third pushed the Raiders' lead up to 9-0 after three innings.

Wright State continued piling on in the fourth, scoring for their fourth straight inning. This time, a two-run home run extended the advantage to 11-0. In the fifth inning, WSU put up runs once again, getting three more on two hits and an error. Scoreless sixth and seventh innings kept the score at 14-0 after seven. EMU was unable to get on the board with five hits through the seven frames.

The final two innings were more of the same, with neither team adding any more runs to the scoreboard. Sophomore reliever Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) was the leader on the mound to close the game, going four innings, only allowing one earned run, and striking out two batters.

Game 2: Wright State 7, Eastern Michigan 5

The Eagles put up nine hits in the second game, only being out-hit by one. They were led by senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta, Vauxhall), who had a 2-for-4 day with a double and RBI.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy), in his first career start, went six quality innings, only allowing two earned runs and striking out four, but took the tough loss after not getting the necessary run support.

Eastern began the second game by putting up their first runs of the day, getting one in the first inning after redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) singled and stole second and third for the second straight game. He came in to score on an infield single from senior Jackson Martin (Listowl, Ontario-Listowel).

The lead increased two-fold in the second when McGeein doubled to lead off the inning, and was promptly sacrifice bunted to third. He scored when junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) knocked him in on a sacrifice fly. EMU led 2-0 after two.

The Raiders leapt back ahead in the third inning with three runs on two hits and an error. Before that, Butzin hadn't allowed a hit in the first two innings, striking out one. Innings four and five went quick for both sides, leading to the score sitting at 3-2 into the sixth. Butzin had three K's through five.

Eastern's deficit doubled in the sixth when Wright State tacked on another after a throwing error resulted in the advancement of a runner a couple bases. The Eagles trailed 4-2 going into the final three innings.

WSU kept the EMU bats at bay for a majority of the rest of the way, while they themselves added three insurance runs, to lead 7-2 after eight. In the ninth, EMU got a few back on a two-run double from Stidham, who eventually came around to score himself on an RBI groundout from redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter). However it was not enough, as they fell 7-5.

Eastern has one final game in Dayton tomorrow as the Flyer Classic concludes with a matchup with the host University of Dayton Flyers. First pitch from Woerner Field is set for 1 p.m.
