Baseball Fends off Dayton for 7-6 victory

The Eagles snapped a six game losing streak

XENIA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball snapped a six-game skid with a 7-6 late-inning win over the University of Dayton Wednesday night, March 16 at Grady's Field in Xenia.  The Eagles and Flyers both came back from deficits four times before EMU grabbed the final lead in the top of the ninth.

Eastern (5-11) went for nine hits on the night, including three home runs.  It was the most home runs in a game since hitting three last season, April 10, against Central Michigan University.  Leading the way for the Eagles was redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) who had a 2-for-4 game with two homers, his first two of the season. He was the first Eagle since senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) did so versus Santa Clara last season.  The third homer came courtesy of senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel), his team-leading third of the year.  Martin also had a 2-for-4 day.

On the bump, junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) earned his first win of the season after pitching 1,1 innings of hitless ball, striking out two.  Before that, senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Streetsboro) had a stellar outing in relief to keep the Eagles in it, not allowing an earned run in three innings, striking out a career-best five batters.

The Eagles struck first in the top of the first with some crafty base running, scoring on an error following a stolen base attempt.  Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) got caught in-between first and second, but on the throw back home to try and nab junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif-JSerra), it sailed high, allowing him to score and Williams to advance.

The Flyers (3-11) struck back in the third with a trio of runs on a triple and sacrifice fly, putting the score at 2-1 after two innings.  The Eagles responded in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly from Montgomery after a lead-off single from junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.).  EMU tied the ball game at three apiece in the fourth on the first of Mioduszewski's home runs, a solo shot to right field.  After starting pitcher Austin Wilson's (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) second straight scoreless inning, the game sat tied 3-3 after four innings.

Dayton jumped back ahead in the fifth with two runs on two hits, chasing Wilson from the game, allowing Marsinek to take control of the game.  EMU answered right back in the top of the sixth with Mioduszewski's second home run, a two-run shot down the right field line, tying the game at five after six.

A scoreless seventh led to the eighth when Dayton retook the lead on a solo home run from Martin.  The lead did not last however, when  UD struck for a run in the bottom of the frame after a routine fly ball to right dropped in for a hit.  The Flyers were unable to take the lead after stranding a runner on third, setting the table for the ninth.

In that frame, redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) reached base on an error, putting Montgomery at the plate.  On a sacrifice bunt attempt, the throw went awry, allowing Gill to score from first, and giving EMU the decisive lead. Beaton went one-two-three in the ninth to close the door for the narrow victory.

Eastern now heads further south for the weekend series with Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn.  First pitch for Friday's game at Ken Duggan Field is set for 6 p.m. CT.
