Eagles Rout Bisons in Offensive Explosion, 17-4

3/18/2016 10:05:00 PM | Baseball

EMU tallied 18 hits while only allowing four hits themselves

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a 12-run seventh inning, as well as a four-hit pitching performance from the pitching staff to cruise to a 17-4 victory over Lipscomb University Friday night, March 18 at Ken Dugan Field. The 17 runs marked a season-high for Eastern and the 17 runs were the most since putting up 18 runs against Tennessee Martin in 2014.

The Eagles (6-11) racked up 18 hits on the night, eight of which came in the seventh inning. A trio of Eagles had three-hit games, with sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), and senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) all collecting three. Williams and senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) both drove in three runs, while Martin clubbed his team-leading fourth home run of the season, his second straight game with a homer. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) also hit a home run for the second straight game, his third of the year.

On the mound, freshman right-handed pitcher Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) earned his first career win after pitching six innings of one-hit ball, striking out four. He gave up two earned runs after walking five batters, but kept the Lipscomb (10-8) hitters,
for the most part, at bay. Junior relief pitcher Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) was almost lights out in relief, striking out four in 2.2 innings of work. Freshman Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) came in to record the final out of the game.

The Bisons struck first in the bottom of the first, getting a run without registering a hit. Feldman got the first two batters out before walking the next three and allowing one to score on a wild pitch. EMU answered right back in the top half of the second with a run.

The bags were loaded following a double, error and walk, allowing sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) to knock one in on a fielder's choice. LU turned a double play the next batter, eliminating any further threat. Another hitless inning for Feldman in the second left the score at 1-1 after two innings.

Lipscomb tacked on another in the third with their first hit of the game. After placing runners on first and second with an error and walk, LU knocked in a runner with a base hit up the middle. The inning ended on the play though, as the runner on first was thrown out trying to advance to third.

EMU was quick to answer again though, getting the run back in the top of the fourth. Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) hammered his second triple of the season, and came in to score when sophomore Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) drove him in on a squeeze bunt. Meanwhile Feldman continued to cruise, pitching a hitless fourth, fifth and sixth inning, keeping the score 2-2 into the seventh.

The Eagles broke through in the top of the seventh batting around and scoring 12 runs. The inning began with a leadoff pinch-hit single from Montgomery, who was promptly advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a hit by pitch, Williams drove in the leading run with a single through the right side, getting the scoring started.

Another squeeze bunt knocked in another run for EMU, and a throwing error put runners on second and third. A walk loaded the bags for McGeein who singled in another one. Stidham kept the runners moving with a ground rule double to left center field, scoring a pair. With still just one out, EMU increased the lead to 7-2.

Things continued when Eastern tacked on another run after a wild pitch on a strikeout, which was followed by Montgomery's second hit of the inning, an RBI single. After a pitching change, Gill kept the line moving with an RBI double to right, increasing EMU's lead to 9-2.

The 12-run inning was capped off with two more hits, another Williams RBI single and a two-run Martin home run. When it was all said and done, Eastern put up a season-high 12 runs in a single inning on eight hits and an error.

The offense was not done for EMU, as they went for one in the eighth on a Montgomery RBI single and two in the ninth on a two-run home run from Mioduszewski, leaving the score 17-2 into the final at-bat for Lipscomb.

LU didn't go down without a fight, scoring two in the bottom of the ninth on three hits. EMU shut the door though, closing the 17-4 win.

The series continues tomorrow with game two of the series versus Lipscomb. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT at Ken Dugan Field.
