Baseball Drops Game Two of Series Versus Lipscomb

The Eagles out-hit LU by one
The Eagles (6-12) put together another solid offensive performance, following up their 17-run 18-hit game last night, with 11 hits on the day, eclipsing Lipscomb's total by one. Leading the way was senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), who went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot. Freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) had a multi-hit and multi-RBI game with two each, while fellow freshman John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) collected his first career multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 after entering as a pinch hitter.
The Bisons (11-8) got on the board first in the bottom of the first with a run on three hits. Starting pitcher senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) limited the damage though, leaving the bases loaded and striking out two in the frame. Eastern answered immediately in the top of the second, with a pair of runs.
A one-out single from redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) put McGeein at the plate. The veteran parked a home run to dead center, putting Eastern up 2-1. It was Lipscomb's starting pitcher's first homerun allowed in 28.2 innings pitched this season. Gallardo bounced back with a one-two-three second, striking out two more, sustaining EMU's 2-1 lead after two innings.
The righty ran into some trouble in the third, loading the bases with no one out on two walks and a hit batsman, chasing him from the game. In his relief came sophomore Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz-Perry), who allowed one to score on a sacrifice fly, but got out of the jam without further damage, leaving the score at 2-2 after three.
Eastern continued to be sent down in order, allowing LU to retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Bisons went for five runs on three hits, the back breaker being a two-out bases clearing double, giving the Bisons a 7-2 lead after four innings.
The score remained stagnant into the seventh with both teams unable to generate any offense. Sophomore righty reliever Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich-Canton) struck out the side in the sixth, but Eastern was tagged for five runs in the seventh, extending the Bisons lead to 12-2.
EMU's offense battled back in the top half of the eighth, getting three back, cutting the lead to 12-5. A lead-off single led to back-to-back pinch hitters collecting hits as well, with junior John Montgomery's (Anaheim Hills, Calif-JSerra) knocking in a run. A Schuemann RBI single kept the line moving, and one more was driven in following a throwing error from LU.
A scoreless eighth inning from junior reliever Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M. - Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)) gave the Eagles' bats one more chance. They made the attempt at the comeback, getting three more in the ninth. Schuemann and sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) both knocked in runs with singles, but it wasn't enough as EMU dropped the game by four runs.
The series concludes tomorrow with the rubber match between the Eagles and Bisons. First pitch from Dugan Field is set for 1 p.m. CT.
