Eagles Downed in Series Finale Pitchers Duel

3/20/2016 4:28:00 PM | Baseball

Freshman Tyler Butzin pitched seven scoreless innings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell in its final game of the weekend series against Lipscomb University in a tight pitchers duel, 4-1, Sunday afternoon, March 20.  The game was scoreless going into the eighth before the teams combined for the five runs in the frame.

The star of the afternoon for EMU (6-13) was freshman lefty Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) who, in his second career start, went a career-high seven innings without allowing a run and only yielding three hits, while striking out five.  He picked up the no decision after LU's (12-8) rally in the eighth.

Offensively junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) provided the only spark to the Eagles lineup, hitting his first EMU career home run, a solo shot in the eighth.  Eastern only mustered two other hits in the game.

The Eagles did not get a runner on base until the top of the fifth, while Butzin worked his way out of a couple jams to preserve the scoreless tie.

One of the key plays came in the fifth with a nice defensive play from senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Litowel) who threw out the would-be leading run at the plate following a single to right field.  It was Martin's fourth defensive assist of the season.

The tie was broken up in the top of the eighth with the solo home run from Stidham.  A mile-high pop-up to left field carried all the way out, giving EMU the first run of the day.

The lead was short lived as LU answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.  The Bisons loaded the bags with no one out, and all three came around to score on a double.  The hitter who hit the two-bagger came to score later in the inning on a single, giving Lipscomb a 4-1 lead into EMU's final turn at bat.  The Eagles went down in order to seal the loss.

Eastern is back in action next weekend with the home and Mid-American Conference opener against Bowling Green State University at Oestrike Stadium.  The three-game weekend series is set to begin Friday, March 20 with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
