Men's Golf Shatters Records at the Desert Shootout

EMU sets the team total for an 18-hole round as well as a 54-hole tournament

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – It was a record-setting day in the Valley of the Sun for the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team, as the Eagles mowed down the par-72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Club course at the Desert Shootout, March 19. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew fired a final round 16-under 272 to finish in fifth-place with a two-day tally of 839 (284-283-272).
Numerous records fell on the day as the Eagles finished behind tournament champion Iowa State University, which posted a 41-under par 823 (276-275-272). EMU's 54-hole score shattered the program's previous record of 855 (287-288-280) set at the Xaiver Invitational, Oct. 14-15, 2002, while the team's final round mark of 272 was one stroke ahead of its previous single round standard of 273 set at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18, 2010.
Junior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) continued his success with a 68 on Saturday with to finish in a tie for seventh with a 10-under 206 (68-70-68). The total is tied for the best three-round score in program history. Korey Mahoney also shot a 206 (71-65-70) at the Marshall Invitational, April 8, 2005. For Rhodes, it was of course a career best tally on the weekend as he picked up his second career top-10 finish. Joo-Young Lee of Northern Illinois and Antoine Rozner of UMKC shared the individual title at 14-under.
Behind Rodes, sophomore Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) and senior Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) each notched rounds of 67 to climb the charts on the final day. The duos identical marks were tied for the lowest EMU rounds of the year as well. Ross finished tied for 15th with a 209 (69-73-67) with a tally that is tied for the ninth-best three round score in EMU history; meanwhile, White moved into 24th place at 211 (73-71-67).
Junior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.) finished in 53rd with a n even-par 216 (74-72-70) while freshman Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) was tied for 73rd with a 220 (76-70-74). Playing as an individual, junior Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) managed rounds of 77, 75 and 74 for a two day tally of 226 (77-75-74).
The Eagles return to action March 28-29 when they head to Little Rock, Ark., for the at UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic.
