The Eagles record on the weekend now sits at 2-2
CHARLESTON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team lost a pair of early leads Saturday, March 19, on day two of the College of Charleston Invitiational. Scoring first in each of their games, the Eagles could not hold on eventually falling 9-1 to the Univeristy of Connecticut (10-18) and 2-1 to the tournament host, Cougars (10-5).
Game #1: UConn 9, Eastern Michigan 1
Freshman Olivia Logan's (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) RBI-single in the first inning brought fellow freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) across the plate after she reached on a leadoff triple, giving EMU a one-run lead.
The first inning run proved to be all the Eagles could plate as the Green and White went on to strand six on base over the next six frames. Meanwhile, UConn evened the score in the second before adding one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead into the seventh.
Trailing 9-1 after the Huskies five-run seventh, junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) walked before sophomore Haley Hostetler's (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) double put runners on second and third with one out. Following a strikeout, senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) walked to load the bases but the Eagles' rally fell short as a groundball ended the game.
The 9-1 setback moved freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) to 5-8 on the year. The righty hurler allowed nine hits over 6.0 innings while walking five.
Offensively, Logan finished the game 3-for-3 with one run scored and a RBI.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 1, College of Charleston 2
Once again, Logan put the Eagles in front early. The Riverview, Mich. native's RBI-single in the third lifted the Green and White to a 1-0 lead and broke the scoreless tie.
The game stood in favor of the Eagles until the fifth when a two-run homer gave the Cougars a 2-1 edge.
Eastern Michigan's best opportunity to even the score came in top of the sixth when senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) opened the frame with a double. Clark was lifted for freshman Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt). Coming in as a pinch runner, Saporito was advanced to third before being stranded.
Unable to get a runner on in the seventh, the Eagles were sent down in order, falling 2-1. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 0-2 on the day and 2-2 at the tournament.
Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) was credited with the loss after 7.0 innings in the circle. Going the distance, Minsker gave up two runs on nine hits while striking out one.
Clark paced the Eagles' offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double while Logan registered the lone RBI for the Green and White.
The Eagles close out the weekend Sunday, March 20, against Miami University. EMU's tilt with the RedHawks is set for 9 a.m.
