Eagles Finish as the Runner Up at MAC Match Play Challenge

Redshirt senior Karyn Lee Ping finished the day 2-0
Bracket.
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team closed out the Mid-American Conference Match Play Tuesday, Feb. 9, against third-seeded Akron and top-seeded Kent State University. The Eagles bested Akron, 3-2, in the semifinals before falling to the Golden Flashes, 4-1, in the finals.
Three of six golfers contributed points on the day while redshirt senior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario-St. Augustine Secondary School) came away with a 2-0 record in the two matches.
Schools were competing in teams of five with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.
In the semifinals round, redshirt senior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman) took a 5-and-3 decision over Makayla Dull, while Ping finished one-up on Akron's Pader Her. Sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) nabbed a 4-and-3 decision over Frida Fourberg while freshman Kritsuda Apiwattanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) and junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Ohio-Plymouth) fell in their matches.
The 3-2 win advanced the Eagles to the finals where they met top-seeded Kent State.
Against the Golden Flashes, Ping recorded the Eagles' lone win of the match, taking a 1-and-1 decision over KSU's Amira Alexander as the Green and White fell, 4-1.
The Eagles continue the spring season, Feb. 26-28, in Rio Verde, Ariz. There, the Green and White will take part in the three-day Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan.
