Offense Aplenty in Eagles' Extra-Inning Loss to Seton Hall

2/28/2016 4:02:00 PM | Softball

Sophomore Haley Hostetler paced the Eagles with three hits and three RBIs

CLEARWATER, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team's 10-day stint in the Sunshine State came to a close, Feb. 28, with an extra-inning loss to Seton Hall University. A late lead slipped away from the Eagles (6-9) before the Pirates (9-7) upended the Green and White, 11-9, in eight innings.

Sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) paced the offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a trio of RBIs. The rest of the Eagles' run production was fairly balanced with four others pitching in a RBI while all but one Eagle recorded a hit on the day.

In the circle, an early liner off freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif-Port of Los Angeles) forced EMU to the bullpen early. Ultimately, Eastern used its entire pitching staff in the contest with Miranda pitching 3.2 innings. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich. - Hartland) was the pitcher of record, taking the loss after 2.1 innings of work.

Scoreless through two full innings, the teams offense's awakened in the third. Seton Hall opened the frame with a double before a homerun put the Pirates in front 3-0.

The Eagles wasted little time responding, putting a three-spot on the board in their half of the third. An error jumpstarted the Green and White before junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) doubled to center, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Kriegshauser's double was matched by freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra), who traded places with the junior rightfielder before senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton (Alma)) delivered a double of her own to knot the score at three. Stepping to the plate with a runner on second, Hostetler singled down the left field line to put the Green and White in front, 4-3.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Seton Hall sent a liner off of Miranda in the circle, forcing her to an early exit. Entering the game in relief, Minsker gave up a single before bouncing back to force a lineout, ending the Pirates' threat.

Eastern then pushed their lead to two, as sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) crossed the plate after a mishandled grounder by SHU's second baseman.

The Pirates threatened again in the fifth, putting two on with one out, but Minsker and the Eagles defense held them without a run to maintain the two-run lead.

Clark opened the bottom of the fifth with a single to center before senior Mady Hostetler's (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second with one out. Returning to the plate with a runner in scoring position, Haley Hostetler singled to left, scoring pinch-runner Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa). She then came around to cross the plate on another miscue in the field by the Pirates, giving EMU a 7-3 edge with two innings to play.

The Pirates' offense plated six in the top of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead into the final frame. A leadoff double started the rally before errors and timely hits by Seton Hall turned the tables on the Eagles.

Trailing by two, Eastern Michigan was down to its final three outs with the heart of its lineup coming to bat. Senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) singled through the left side before Mady Hostetler walked, putting two on for Haley Hostetler. The hot-hitting shortstop took full advantage of the opportunity, lacing a double to the center field fence, scoring Davidson. Freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) kept the rally going with a RBI-single to level the score at nine. Mady Hostetler scored easily on the play while Haley Hostetler fell victim of a well-placed cut out throw, only to be called out at the plate.

With the score even at nine, the Eagles headed to extra-innings for the third time this season. A two-run eighth by the Pirates put the Eagles backs against the wall once again, this time trailing 11-9. Despite a runner being placed on second and a two-out walk, a groundout to second ended the game in favor of SHU.

The loss marked the final game of the weekend for the Eagles, dropping their record at the USF Tournament to 2-3.

Eastern returns to action March 12-13 in Morehead, Ky. for the Morehead State Tournament. There, the Eagles will take on St. Bonaventure and Morehead State.
