The Green and White dropped games to Alabama State and Troy, Feb. 13
TROY, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a heartbreaking extra-inning game versus Alabama State University before falling to Troy University on day two of the Trojan Invite, Feb. 13. An early lead slipped away from the Eagles (0-4) in game one as Alabama State (1-2) came back in the eighth inning to walk-off with a 9-7 win. In game two, the Trojans (3-0) handed EMU a 13-2 setback in five innings.
Game 1: Eastern Michigan 7, Alabama State 9 (8 innings)
Trujillo needed just eight pitches to take care of the Hornets in the opening frame, inducing a trio of groundouts to make quick work of ASU and keep the game scoreless.
Senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) opened the second inning with a leadoff single before sophomore speedster Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) replaced her on first as a pinch runner. After stealing second, Schilke advanced to third on a single by senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange). Sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) with a four-pitch walk to load the bases for freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview). Stepping to the plate, Logan fought off three pitches before finding a gap in left-center. The two-out double by Logan capped a four-run two-out rally for the Eagles, giving the Green and White a 4-0 lead through one and a half innings of play.
It looked as though the Hornets were going to cut into EMU's lead with two runners on and no outs in the bottom half of the second, but Trujillo and the Eagles' defense stepped up and retired the next three batters to maintain the 4-0 edge.
Singles by sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) and Olmos set Logan up for another RBI situation with two outs. Facing an 0-2 count, Logan drove a deep fly ball to the fence in center but ASU's center fielder leaped at the wall to make the play, robbing Logan of a three-run homerun.
The Hornets used a four-run fifth inning to even the score at four and force a pitching change for the Eagles. Entering the game in relief, Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) pitched a pair of scoreless innings to send the game into extras.
In the top of the eighth, with senior Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) on second, freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) singled to left center, scoring Barnes. With her team now in front by one, 5-4, Clark stepped to the plate and drove the second pitch over the left field fence to extend EMU's lead to three, 7-4.
Alabama State cut the Eastern lead to two before a two-out three-run home run stunned the Eagles, giving the Hornets a 9-7 walk-off win.
Game 2: Eastern Michigan 2, Troy 13 (5 innings)
Trailing by 10 after three innings of play, the Eagles broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning. A leadoff walk by Akles was followed up by singles off the bats of Haley Hostetler and senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). After Mady Hostetler's single plated one run, senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) reached on a fielder's choice bringing another run across the plate for the Green and White.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, Troy's explosive offense added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to push their lead to 13-2 and end the game in five innings.
The Eagles close out the Trojan Invite tomorrow, Feb. 14, with a rematch with the University of Evansville. First pitch between the Eagles and Purple Aces is slated for 9:30 a.m. (CST).
