Eagles Close Out Opening Weekend With Loss to Evansville

EMU continues to 2016 campaign next weekend at the Madeira Beach Invitational
TROY, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team closed out opening weekend at the Trojan Invitational, Feb. 14, against the University of Evansville. Looking to get revenge for Friday loss to the Purple Aces (4-1), the Eagles (0-5) fell victim of a come-from-behind 3-1 win for Evansville.
The Green and White had its fair share of opportunities in the game, stranding 11 on base to UE's five over the course of the game, but could not capitalize.
Sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) earned the start for the Eagles, pitching 4.0 innings and striking out five. Giving up three runs on four hits, Trujillo was credited with the loss, moving her to 0-1 on the season.
Following a scoreless opening inning in which each team stranded one on base, senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) drew a leadoff walk in the second. Relieved by a pinch runner, senior Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) swiped second before crossing the plate on an error and wild pitch.
Senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) kept the Eagles going with a hard double down the left field line, chasing the Purple Aces' starting pitcher, Amanda Blakenship. Sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) was then hit by a pitch, putting two on with nobody out for freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale). Despite a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Olmos, the Eagles left the Hostetler's on second and third after a pair of fly outs ended the threat.
Trujillo kept the Purple Aces in check in the bottom half of the second, striking out two.
After the Eagles left the bases loaded in the top of the third, Evansville evened the score at one. With the Purple Aces attempting to rally and take the lead, Trujillo pitched her way out of a jam. With two on and one out, the Whittier, Calif. product sent back-to-back batters down on strikes to end the inning.
Eastern loaded the bases once again in the fourth but came up empty, leaving the score locked at one with the Purple Aces coming to bat.
Trujillo continued to deal in the circle, retiring the Purple Aces in order, including a nine-pitch strikeout to end the inning.
A double to the center field fence gave Evansville a 2-1 lead in the fifth and ended the day for Trujillo. Junior Abbie Minkser (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) entered the game in relief, inheriting a runner on second with no outs. Despite retiring the first three batters she faced, a sacrifice fly pushed Evansville's lead two, with the Eagles coming to bat in the sixth.
Eastern went down in order in the top of the sixth. The Purple Aces put two on in their half of the inning but a strikeout by Minsker was followed by a quick throw to third by Duffy to catch the runner stealing and end the inning.
Trailing by two in the final inning, the Eagles sent junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central), freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra), and Duffy to the plate. Despite a two-out single by Duffy, a strikeout ended the game, 3-1, in favor of UE.
The Eagles continue the 2016 campaign in Madeira Beach, Fla. Where they will host the 2016 EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, Feb. 19-21. There, the Green and White will face off against UMASS-Lowell, Feb. 19, at 9:30 a.m. to begin the weekend before taking on Manhattan, Marist, George Mason, and Siena.
