Eastern fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss
TROY, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team wrapped up day one of play at the Trojan Invite with a loss to tournament host, Troy University, Feb. 12. The Trojans' (1-0) bats proved to be too much to handle for the Eagles (0-2), as the Green and White fell, 14-1.
Senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) and sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) each went 1-for-2 on the day to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Hostetler registered an RBI. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) earned the nod in the circle and recorded the loss, while both sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) and freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) appeared in relief.
The Trojans bats powered the home team to an 8-0 lead in the first inning before adding runs in the second and third inning to extend their advantage to 11-0 over the Green and White.
EMU broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth inning on a one-out single up the middle by Clark. After a groundout moved sophomore pinch runner Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) to second, Haley Hostetler singled to left field, bringing Schilke home.
Troy added three runs in the bottom of the fourth before the Eagles came up empty in their half of the fifth. Unable to push a run across the plate in the fifth, Troy handed EMU a 14-1 loss.
The Eagles continue play at the Trojan Invite tomorrow, Feb. 13, with games against Alabama State University and a rematch with Troy. Eastern's game with the Hornets is slated for 1 p.m. (CST).
