Women's Swimming & Diving Leads After Day One of EMU Invitational

The Eagles won six of seven events on the day

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team posted a day one score of 435 points on the first day of the EMU Invitational after winning six of the seven events throughout the day. The Eagles sit in first-place, while Wayne State University (318) and Ashland University (170) round out the top-three.
Freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) paced a dominating effort on the 1-meter springboard to begin the day. Turning in a career-best score of 284.10, Johnston claimed first, while junior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) nabbed second with a score of 276.10. The duo headlined the Eagles' diving team that claimed five of the top-six slots.
The Eagles sent two swimmers to the pool for the 1650 freestyle, eventually coming away with a pair of season-bests and a 1-2 punch in the squad's first time competing in the event this season. Sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) dropped nearly 20 seconds before touching in with a season-best time of 16:44.56 to secure the win. Junior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) clocked in with a season-best time of 16:57.74 to complete the 1-2 finish.
Eastern's winning ways carried over to the 200 backstroke where freshman Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) claimed the win with a time of 2:02.24. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) placed third with a time of 2:03.09.
One of EMU's top overall performances came in the 100 freestyle, where the Green and White swept the top-three spots thanks to a trio of veterans. Senior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) led the way, taking first with a time of 51.45, while senior Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) and sophomore Stephanie Johnston completed the clean sweep.
Moving to the 200 breaststroke, the Eagles repeated their 100 free success, coming away with the top-three times. Sophomore Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) paced the Green and White, winning the race with a time of 2:18.64. Senior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) was the runner-up, while senior Emily Wimmer (Hammond, Ind.-Munster) touched in in third.
After sophomores Emilie Desnoyers and Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.-Williamsville) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly, the Eagles closed out the day with a 400 Free Relay win. Wagner, Johnston, and Van Allen teamed up with senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) for the relay win with a time of 3:23.46, while another Eagle relay claimed second.
The Green and White close out the EMU Invitational tomorrow, Dec. 3. The morning session is slated to begin at 10 a.m., while the evening session is scheduled for 6 p.m.
