Eagles Cruise Past Wayne State & Tiffin, Move to 6-0 in Dual Action

Three Eagles picked up multiple wins

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team moved to 7-0 in dual action this season with wins over Wayne State University and Tiffin University Saturday, Jan. 21, at Jones Natatorium. EMU bested Wayne State, 179-85, and topped Tiffin, 179-60. Eastern won all but one event, while three Eagles picked up multiple wins on the day.
The Green and White started the meet off strong, claiming the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay. Leading way for the Eagles was the group of seniors Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), Genna Worthely (Portland, Maine-Deering), Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville), and sophomore Dora Vrcic with a time of 1:42.36. In second place, EMU showcased their talents as freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) and sophomores Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), and Stephanie Johnston touched in with a time of 1:42.94, more than four seconds ahead of the third-place team from Wayne State.
Moving to the 1000 Freestyle, a pair of seniors fueled EMU to a 1-2 sweep. Senior Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) led the way, turning in a season-best time of 10:25.05, while Abby Aumiller (Canton, Mich.-Salem) posted a second-place finish.
Eastern's success carried over to the 200 Free, where the Green and White posted three of the top-four times. Sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) registered the win, clocking in in 1:53.62, while junior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) finished second.
Youth led the way for Eastern Michigan in the 100 Backstroke as Liberman, Young, and freshman Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) turned in the top-three times. Just three tenths of a second separated the trio, as Liberman clocked in with a time of 57.58. Young wasn't far behind, finishing in 57.56, while Gavigan touched in at 57.88.
From there, Duncan picked up a win in the 100 Breaststroke before sophomore Emilie Desnoyers secured a first-place finish in the 200 Butterfly.
Wagner added another win to the Eagles' total in the 50 Free, finishing with a time of 23.43, before the meet turned its focus to diving.
Freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) grabbed a pair of first-place finishes on the springboard to pace the Eagle divers.
Mitcheltree reeled in a win in the 100 Free and Gavigan picked up a first-place finish in the 200 Back, to continue EMU's win streak.
The Eagles added a sweep of the top three spots in the 200 Breast, paced by a win by Worthley. Dombkowski, Vrcic, and Swartz each added victories to close out the meet.
The Eagles return to Mid-American Conference action next weekend, Saturday, Jan. 28, in Buffalo, N.Y. There, EMU will square off against the University at Buffalo. The meet is slated for 1 p.m.
