EMU Treks to Buffalo for MAC Showdown

EMU will travel to Buffalo for the first time since 2014

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team makes the long trek east for a Mid-American Conference clash with the Bulls of the University at Buffalo, Saturday, Jan. 28, at Alumni Arena Natatorium in Buffalo, N.Y.

Most recently, Eastern Michigan topped Wayne State (179-85) and Tiffin (179-60) in tri-dual action at home, Jan. 21. EMU won all but one event, while two Eagles picked up multiple wins. Freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) and sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) paced the Green and White on the day. Johnston swept the springboard events for the second time this season, including a career-best score of 289.10 on the 1-meter. Meanwhile, Swartz made her mark in the 200 Freestyle and 400 Individual Medley. In the 200 Free, Swartz clocked in with a time of 1:53.62 for her first career win in the event. Her time was also a personal-best and nearly two seconds better than her previous best.

The Bulls enter the weekend looking to build off of an 187-113 win over Bowling Green, Jan. 20. Buffalo turned in a number of solid performances, highlighted by Hannah Miller's wins in the 200, 500, and 1000 Freestyle, and Abbey Croce's sweep of the diving events.

This go-around between the Eagles and Bulls pits some of the top talent in the MAC against each other. EMU owns 38 of the MAC's top-20 times, while UB appears in the rankings on 35 occasions. Saturday's dual will see two of the MAC's best sprint freestylers square off in Eastern's Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) and Buffalo's Megan Burns. The reigning 50 Free MAC Champion Burns holds the top time in the MAC this season, while Wagner comes in with the third-best time this year.

The last time the two squads met in dual action was back on Jan. 24, 2015, when the Eagles overcame the Bulls, 181-177, in Ypsilanti. The Green and White won a total of 10 events, while Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) paced the Eagles with three victories. After leading EMU to a first-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay to open the meet, Mitcheltree bested the field in both the 100 and 200 Backstroke. Monica Dorszewski and Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte) also posted two wins apiece in EMU's win.

Action inside of Alumni Arena Natatorium between EMU and UB is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
