Eagles Top Denison in Home Opener

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a balanced effort, the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team topped Denison University, 191-104, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22, at Jones Natatorium.
EMU kicked the meet off with a sweep of the top-three spots in the 200 Medley Relay. The relay team made up of sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary), freshman Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev), junior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Stanford), and senior Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park) clocked in at 1:33.50 to lead the way, while two other EMU relay squads finished second and third.
Feeding off the energy from the sweep, senior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarskton, Mich.) claimed the top spot in the 1000 freestyle, touching in with a time of 9:42.66.
Sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) picked up the win in the 200 freestyle, while junior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) claimed second.
Following the 1-2 punch in the 200 free, the Eagles swept the 100 back. Fueled by reigning Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week, Kawaguchi, the Green and White turned in the top three times. Kawaguchi won the event, clocking in with a time of 50.35, while senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) and sophomore Ricky Perez finished second and third, respectively.
From there, Tsenkov gave the Eagles another win. Touching in with a time of 58.82, Tsenkov bested the field in the 100 breaststroke. Redshirt junior Lance Bergmann (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) posted a time of 59.37 in a third-place effort.
In the 200 butterfly, freshman Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalace #4), and freshman Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy) led Eastern Michigan to a sweep. Saladin registered the first first-place finish of his career, clocking in with a time of 1:52.77. Rzyski touched in just behind him, while Arrieta completed the sweep.
Returning to the pool after helping the Eagles to a win in a relay earlier in the afternoon, Johnson won a tight race in the 50 free. Touching in with a time of 21.43, the Fort Bragg, N.C. native beat out the second-place finisher by a one hundredth of a second.
After Johnson's victory, Burton took first and senior Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) took third in the 100 free. Burton's first-place finish gave EMU its seventh consecutive win.
Kawaguchi, Bateman, and Perez struck again in the 200 back, claiming the top three spots. The trio of top-three finishes marked the Eagles' third sweep of the meet.
Tsenkov and Bergmann continued their domination of the breaststroke, finishing 1-2. Tsenkov touched in half a second ahead of Bergmann for his second win of the day.
In the 500 free, Arrieta and Rzyski added a pair of top-three finishes, finishing first and third, respectively. Clocking in with a time of 4:39.09, Arrieta posted the first win of his career.
Tyson (100 fly) and Perez (200 IM) closed out the meet with wins, sealing Eastern's 191-104 victory.
Following two weeks off of competition, the Eagles return to the pool, Nov. 12, in Rochester, Mich. There, the Green and White will square off against Oakland University at 1 p.m.

EMU kicked the meet off with a sweep of the top-three spots in the 200 Medley Relay.
