MEET NOTES

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
Following a preseason in which the squad beat the University of Michigan, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team will open their season on the road with a quad-meet against No. 32 Maryland, Pittsburgh, and Towson. The event will be hosted by Pittsburgh, and is slated to begin at 2 p.m. in Fitzgerald Field House.

Scouting the Competition: Last season, Maryland was the highest ranked of the bunch at the end of the season, as they sat in 30th with an average team score of 194.981. The Terrapins also posted a season high of 196.075, which was set at the Big Ten Championships. Six seniors from that squad have since graduated, but the team returns a number of talented gymnasts as well. Abbie Epperson and Dominiquea Trotter both had great freshman seasons, as Epperson notched a high of 9.9 on both vault and bars, while Trotter regularly posted scores above 9.8 on vault. In addition to the freshmen duo, Kathy Tang returns for her final season with the Terrapins. Tang consistently  contributes on multiple events, as the now senior notched multiple scores above 9.8 on vault, beam, and floor last year.
Towson ended the season ranked 43rd, as the Tigers had an average team score of 194.419 and a high of 196.525. Towson saw four seniors graduate following their 4th-place East Atlantic Gymnastics League conference finish, including Samantha Lutz, Lauren Ross, and Nicolette Vignola. However, the team returns their best all-arounder in Tyra McKellar, who had a solid freshman season in which she notched a 38.675 at Regionals. In addition to McKellar, Lauren Cahalan is capable of putting up high scores on floor and beam and Vicki Vesecky posted a 9.9 on bars in a victory over George Washington. Six freshmen are also part of the squad, which could provide additional depth behind the returners.
Rounding out the group are the Panthers of Pittsburgh. Pitt finished the 2015 season in 51st, while holding an average of 193.257 and a season high of 194.875. The Panthers improved steadily throughout the season, as they scored below a 193 in their first four meets before notching above a 193 in the remaining meets of the season. A number of seniors from that squad are no longer with the team. However, Miya Dotson and Lindsay Offutt both return after competing all-around in the EAGL conference championship. After the conference meet, Offutt went on to Regionals for the balance beam, ultimately finishing in a tie for sixth with a 9.875. She holds career highs of 9.95 on both beam and floor, in addition to 9.85 on bars. The Panthers will also look to senior Lisa Soto, who maintains career highs of 9.875 on vault and 9.825 on both bars and beam.

Last Time Out: In a preseason tune-up meet with the Michigan Wolverines, the Eagles emerged victorious, 194.050 - 183.350. The name of the game for the Green and White was consistency, as the team posted hits on 25-of-27 routines, including exhibition performances. The Maize and Blue did not put up a final counting score on floor, resulting in the large scoring discrepancy. Despite this, the meet was out of reach even if the Wolverines' final competitor scored a perfect 10.0. The day was highlighted by a number of new skill debuts, including new bar dismounts from Catie Conrad and Kendall Valentin, as well as a new vault from Rachel Slocum. Conrad also competed all-around for the first time in her collegiate career, posting a 38.725.

Looking Ahead: After opening the season with a quad-meet at Pittsburgh, the Eagles remain on the road for a dual-meet with Western Michigan and Bowling Green. The event will be hosted in Kalamazoo, Mich. and is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in University Arena.

EMU Selected Third in MAC Preseason Poll: Eastern Michigan was predicted to finish third in the Mid-American Conference, as the conference office released the 2016 MAC Gymnastics Preseason Coaches Poll, Wednesday, Dec. 23.
Eastern Michigan was tabbed by the conference coaches to finish third after being selected fifth at this time last season.     After finishing fourth at the conference championship in 2015, the Eagles will look to improve upon their standing throughout the year.
The league's head coaches picked Central Michigan to claim the regular season title after taking second last year by one tenth.  Kent State took home the MAC title in 2015, and sits second in the preseason poll. Just behind EMU is Bowling Green in fourth, while NIU and Western Michigan are tied for fifth. Ball State rounds out the programs in seventh, respectively.

Preseason Victory at Michigan: The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team opened their season with a huge exhibition win over the University of Michigan, Sunday, Dec. 6, at Crisler Center. The Eagles emerged victorious, 194.050 - 183.350, as the team managed to hit 25 of 27 routines on the day.
The Eagles got off to a hot start on bars, as the team went 6-for-6 and posted a number of very solid routines. Sydney McEachern got the Green and White off to a great start, as she hit a solid routine and minimized her deductions, taking only a small step on her dismount. Kirsten Gendron and Lacey Rubin followed McEachern with beautiful routines of their own, as both had very good lines throughout their sets. The next three Eagles all posted scores of 9.75 with strong sets, as Natalie Gervais, and sophomores Catie Conrad and Kendall Valentin kept the momentum in favor of EMU. Each routine improved on the previous, as Conrad ended the rotation on a high note for the Eagles, sticking her double layout dismount. After the first rotation, the Green and White led the Wolverines, 48.675 - 48.550.
After notching six hits on bars, the team kept the ball rolling on vault. Kimberly Ebeyer began with a nice yurchenko half, taking just a small step on the landing. The next three Eagles all performed yurchenko fulls, with Kelsie Brooks, Conrad, and McEachern all taking just a small step on their landings. Rachel Slocum performed a different vault, as she debuted a nice handspring front pike. To close the event,  Ciara Gresham hit a powerful yurchenko full to notch a 9.65. With vault and bars completed, the Eagles clung to a 97.075 - 96.050 lead over the Maize and Blue.
Floor marked the first time that the Eagles encountered a bit of adversity. McEachern got the Eagles off to a good start, posting a 9.725 in the leadoff spot.  Gervais then had a small hiccup in her routine, but the team recovered nicely. Conrad got the Eagles back on track, followed by a hit set from Gendron, which included clean and controlled tumbling throughout. In the anchor spot, Slocum opened with a beautiful double pike, as she closed out the rotation with a 9.725. After three, EMU clung to a 145.375 - 144.750 lead over U-M.
As the Wolverines were still within striking distance, the Eagles needed a strong beam rotation to close out the meet. The team delivered in a big way, as the lowest counting beam score was a 9.6. Ebeyer got the group off to a strong start, earning a 9.65. Highlighting the event was Valentin, who with her gorgeous series, came away with a 9.8 to lead the team. After the Holmdel, N.J. native's set, the next three competitors all turned in scores of 9.7 or above, as Gervais came away with a 9.7, while Rubin and Conrad earned a 9.75 and a 9.775, respectively. With a 48.675 on the event, the Eagles' final team score stood at a 194.050, which was better than last year's exhibition meet by nearly a point and a half.

Key Veteran Returners: Despite the loss of Eagle veterans Anna Willette, Carrina Lo Bello, Chantelle Loehner, Paulina Miller, and Nikki Paterson, the Eagles return a squad full of talent.
The Eagles' top returner will be sophomore Kendall Valentin, who was Second Team All-MAC selection following her freshman year. She provides the Green and White with high scoring on bars, beam, and vault. Junior Sydney McEachern and sophomore Catie Conrad also look to contribute on multiple events for the Eagles this season.
Additionally, senior Kimberly Ebeyer provides a veteran presence, as she has competition experience on vault, beam, and floor throughout her three seasons as an Eagle. Junior Lacey Rubin provides a big score on bars and beam as well, while junior Natalie Gervais and sophomore  Rachel Slocum are high scoring returners on beam and floor, respectively. Both Valentin and Conrad may be seen in the all-around this season, as both have been working to improve their floor routines.

New Faces in the Gym: The Eagles welcome five new faces to the 2016 squad: Sydney Audet, Carly Clark, Kaitlyn Ford, Ciara Gresham, and Megan Hultgren.

Vault: The Eagles will miss vault anchor Anna Willette, but also bring back experienced vaulters from last season.  Both Valentin and sophomore Julia Schwartz scored above 9.8 last season. McEachern proved to be a consistent vaulter last season as well, as she competed in every meet with an average vault score of 9.7. Slocum, who looks to debut a new 10.0 value vault this season, will be in the mix as well. Newcomer Ciara Gresham finished tenth on vault at JO Nationals this past season, and will give the Green and White another powerful vaulter capable of putting up a solid score. Other potential contributors on the event include Catie Conrad and junior Kelsie Brooks, who is returning from an injury this past season.

Bars: The Green and White return a host of gymnasts with experience on bars, highlighted by Kendall Valentin, Catie Conrad, and Lacey Rubin. Both Conrad and Natalie Gervais have been working upgraded skills that will make a big impact on the bar lineup as a whole. McEachern and Brooks will look to make an impact as well, with both gymnasts having competition experience on the event. Freshman Megan Hultgren was a three-time level 10 state bars champion and will make an immediate impact on the Eagle lineup. Fellow freshman Carly Clark looks to be fight ing for a lineup spot as well.

Beam:  The team will once again miss the consistency of beam anchor Anna Willette. However, the Eagles have built up depth on beam, as five returners from last year all have competition experience on what is considered to be the toughest event in gymnastics. The Green and White will look to Catie Conrad, who posted six scores of 9.7 or higher in the 2015 season, as well as  Kimberly Ebeyer, who notched a season-high of 9.8. Additionally, Natalie Gervais scored above a 9.8 in four separate meets within the span of a month. Lacey Rubin is also capable of putting up big scores on the event, as she went on a streak lasting from Jan. 17 until the end of the season in which she scored above a 9.725 in nine meets. Finally, Kendall Valentin competed on beam in multiple meets as well, scoring a season-high 9.75 against Kent State, Feb. 7.  Freshman Megan Hultgren looks to be in the mix for lineup immediately, as she is very strong on beam. Freshman Kaitlyn Ford will provide additional depth as well.

Floor: On floor, EMU will miss the big scores provided by anchor Chantelle Loehner.   This season, the  squad will look to Sydney McEachern and Rachel Slocum to lead the floor lineup. McEachern, who was in the floor lineup for every meet,  averaged a 9.73 on the year and had a season-high of 9.8 twice. Slocum, who was also regularly in the lineup, earned six scores throughout the season above 9.8. Freshman Ciara Gresham will look to make a big impact on the floor lineup with her powerful tumbling as well. Sophomore Kirsten Gendron has had a strong preseason and is expected to appear in the Eagle lineup as well. While Natalie Gervais and Julia Schwartz did not see any action on floor this past season, both look to contribute this season.

2016 Schedule: The Green and White open their regular season with a tri-meet on the road against Pittsburgh and Maryland Sunday, Jan. 10 in Fitzgerland Field House. Following their opening meet, the team begins their Mid-American Conference season with  a tri-meet against Western Michigan and Bowling Green Sunday, Jan. 17 on the campus of WMU.
The Eagles then continue their season on the road, as the team will travel to Muncie, Ind. for a meet with Ball State Sunday, Jan. 24, in Irving Gymnasium. As Ball State will be hosting the 2016 MAC Championships, this event will allow the Eagles to gain experience in the venue and familiarize themselves with their surroundings, which could be valuable at the end of the season . To close out the month of January, the team begins their home schedule with a meet against Northern Illinois Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Convocation Center.
The team then has a string of three meets in eight days, which will test the endurance and depth of the squad as a whole. Following their home opener, the squad opens February with another home dual, this time against Central Michigan Friday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles then return to Ann Arbor for a bout with the Wolverines, as well as the Terrapins, Monday, Feb. 8, at 7:00 p.m. To close out the three-meet stretch, the Green and White travel to Bowling Green for a meet against the Falcons, as well as Southeast Missouri State. The competition at Anderson Arena will take place Saturday, Feb. 13, at 6:00 p.m.
Less than a week later, the team returns home for a competition against Western Michigan, which will take place Friday Feb. 19. To finish out February, the Eagles travel to Columbus, Ohio for a bout against Ohio State and Pittsburgh Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7:00 p.m. in St. John Arena.
To close out their season, the Green and White have two final regular season competitions before the conference championship. The Eagles conclude the away-portion of their schedule Friday, Mar. 4, with a meet against Kent State in the M.A.C. Center. The final opportunity for a tune-up before the postseason comes as a competition at home with Central Michigan and Southeast Missouri State Friday, Mar. 11, at 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles then travel back to Muncie, Ind. for the 2016 MAC Championships, which is scheduled to begin Saturday, Mar. 19, at 2:00 p.m. in Irving Gymnasium. The Green and White look to capture their first MAC title since 2007, and their second in program history.
