YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team is set to return to competition this weekend, Jan. 22-23, against Wayne State Unviersity and the University of Akron. The Eagles dual with the Warriors marks the first taste of competition for the Green and White in 2016 and the last non-conference dual of the season.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS: Wayne State travels to Jones Natatorium for a final non-conference dual with the Eagles before taking part in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships next month.
For the Warriors, Emily Marginean and Hannah Loesch look to improve in their second crack at the Eagles. Competing in the 100 and 200 Backstroke at the EMU Invitational Dec. 4-5, Marginean finished runner-up to EMU's Alexis Mitcheltree in both events. As for Loesch, she'll swim alongside Delaney Duncan and Genna Worthley in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke. Loesch finished ahead of the Eagles' duo in the 200 Breast at the EMU Invite but Duncan bested the Warriors' breaststroke specialist in the 100.
RECENT OUTCOMES AGAINST WAYNE STATE: The Eagles have faced Wayne State in dual competition in eight of the past 10 years, compiling an unblemished 8-0 ledger against the Warriors in that time-frame. Most recently, the Green and White throttled Wayne State, 226-73. EMU won all but two events in the Jan. 17, 2015 meeting with Carly Jackson, Alexis Mitcheltree, and Grace Van Allen recording two individual wins apiece.
This weekend's bout with the Warriors marks the second time this season the two squads will compete. Wayne State took part in the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5, coming in second place (939 points) behind the Eagles (1,230 points).
A QUICK GLANCE AT THE ZIPS: Akron boasts a 4-0 record in dual competition this season, highlighted by a perfect 3-0 mark in Mid-American Conference competition. The preseason favorite to repeat as MAC Champions, Akron has been led by the performances of Ragen Engel, Alice Hottensmith, Paloma Marrero Munoz, and Erin Seiler. Engel enters the weekend after winning the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly against Wayne State while Hottensmith posted first and second place finishes on the springboard. Meanwhile Engel's relay teammate, Seiler, recorded a pair of top-two finishes in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Breast.
In last season's MAC Championships, EMU's Rebecca Deacon best Hottensmith in both the 1-meter and 3-meter and will look to do the same this weekend to help the Eagles to a win over Akron. Marrero did not compete against Wayne State but is the reigning MAC Champion in the 200 Breast, creating a potential match up with EMU's Genna Worthley and Delaney Duncan.
INSIDE THE SERIES WITH AKRON: The duals between Akron and Eastern have ended in favor of the Green and White over the past decade, while the Zips have won the past two Mid-American Conference Championships. EMU holds a 8-0 mark against the Zips, dating back to the 2005-06 season. Most recently, the Eagles defeated Akron 223-77, Oct. 31, 2014, in Jones Natatorium. The Green and White won 14 of 16 events in the dual en route to the 146-point win.
SWIMMIN' THEIR WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: Eastern Michigan's relay success continued at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5, as the Eagles etched their names into the record books with a trio of top times. In the 200 Medley Relay, Erika Guenther, Delaney Duncan, Carly Jackson, and Stephanie Johnston clocked in at 1:42.39. The squad's time broke both the pool and meet records. EMU followed up a stellar start in the 800 Freestyle Relay where Grace Van Allen, Emilie Desnoyers, Becca Detro, and Sierra Wagner turned in a meet-record time of 7:28.99, besting the field by more than 11 seconds. The last record time came in the 400 Medley Relay courtesy of Alexis Mitcheltree, Duncan, Jackson, and Van Allen. Together, the foursome earned a first place finish while tying both the pool and meet record (3:44.43).
CLOSING IN ON 250: Head Coach Peter Linn's 27-year tenure at Eastern Michigan has guided the Eagles to a number of successes over the years. Following EMU's sweep of Oakland, Linn's career record on the women's side sits at 61-36 while he owns a 186-58 at helm for the men. Additionally, the win moves Linn's total coaching record to 246-93, good for a .724 winning percentage. With plenty of opportunities on the schedule for each of Linn's teams, he could reach the 250 win mark this season.
