Nationally-Ranked Eagles Continue Season on the Road

The EMU gymnastics team travels to Kalamazoo for a tri-meet with Western Michigan and Bowling Green

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Following the season-opening weekend in which the Eagles notched a trio of wins at the Pittsburgh Quad, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team continue their 2016 season on the road at Western Michigan, Jan. 17. The meet also features Bowling Green, and the tri-meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Scouting the Competition: Western Michigan comes into the meet following a season-opening victory over the University of Illinois at Chicago. In their win over UIC, the Broncos notched a team score of 194.025, which is their best opener in program history, as well as the WMU's largest margin of victory in a dual meet since 2012. Western currently ranks in the top-25 on two events, as the Broncos are No. 21 on beam and No. 17 on floor. Individually, Anna Corbett competed all-around in the season opener, earning a 39.050, proving very consistent with every score above 9.700. The achilles-heel of the Broncos looks to be bars, as the team only posted a 47.925 in their first meet.
On the other hand, Bowling Green posted a pair of losses in their first meet of the season, as the Falcons were bested by Nebraska and Arizona State. The Huskers notched a 194.050, while the host Sun Devlis received a 192.700. Bowling Green rounded out the trio with a 191.900. The team was led by Alyssa Nocella, who posted a 38.925 in the all-around, with her top score of a 9.850 coming on the floor. Lauren Felly competed all-around as well, earning a 38.725. Her best score came on vault with a 9.775. Finally, Laura Mitchell looks to be strong on beam, as she received a 9.800 in the season opener.
Last Time Against the Broncos and the Falcons: Last time out, the Eagles were bested by both squads in the regular season. In a dual with the Broncos, Feb. 20, the Green and White fell to the Broncos, 196.175 - 195.575. EMU's team score was the highest in program history, topping the previous record set at the Mid-American Conference Championships in 2004. On vault, then freshman Kendall Valentin led the Eagles, taking second with a 9.85, while senior Carrina Lo Bello paced the Green and White on bars with a 9.8, good for third. Lo Bello also led the team on beam with a 9.85, and freshman Rachel Slocum took second on floor with a career best 9.875. Lo Bello and senior Anna Willette took second and third in the all-around with scores of 39.150 and 39.100, respectively.
The Falcons also narrowly edged the Eagles in their last regular season meeting. In a quad meet hosted by Michigan State, March 6, Bowling Green notched a 195.250, just ahead of EMU's 195.225. Willette posted the Green and White's highest vault score of the day, receiving a 9.875. On bars, Valentin and sophomore Lacey Rubin both earned scores of 9.850, which was good for third. Sophomore Natalie Gervais paced EMU on beam with a 9.825, and senior Chantelle Loehner led the team on floor with a 9.800. Willette and Lo Bello both competed all-around on the day, notching scores of 39.150 and 38.700.
Eagles Hold Highest Ranking in Program History: With their season opener in the books, the Eagles came in ranked No. 20 in the nation following their first meet. Road to Nationals, the official NCAA Gymnastics ranking site, had the Eagles ranked as the second-best team in the MAC, and ahead of a number of powerhouse programs including Stanford, Nebraska, and Minnesota. In addition to being No. 20 as a team, the Green and White are No. 8 on vault and No. 14 on beam, both of which are best in the MAC.
Individuals in the Rankings: Kendall Valentin ranks No. 13 in the nation on vault and No. 22 on bars, as well as No. 26 on beam. Additionally, Catie Conrad and Rachel Slocum are tied for No. 21 on vault. On the conference level, Valentin, Conrad, and Slocum are the top three vaulters in the MAC, while Valentin is third on bars. Like vault, Valentin and Conrad also occupy the top two spots on beam.
Green and White Sweep Weekly MAC Awards: Kendall Valentin and Rachel Slocum were honored as MAC Gymnast of the Week and MAC Specialist of the Week for their performances at the Pitt Quad meet. Valentin, who competed three events for the team, set career highs on both vault and beam. Slocum competed floor and vault, with this being the first time that she has vaulted for the Eagles. She debuted a beautiful handspring front pike half, and was rewarded with a 9.85. The honors are the first of both sophomores' careers.

Beginning on beam, EMU posted a team score of 48.925, as Kendall Valentin and Catie Conrad paced the Eagles with scores of 9.85 and 9.825. From there, the team notched a 48.375 on floor, with Rachel Slocum receiving a 9.75. On vault, Eastern posted three scores of 9.85 or above, with Valentin earning top honors at 9.875. To close the day, the team traveled to bars, where Valentin and Conrad led the Eagles again with scores of 9.85 and 9.825. Conrad also competed all-around for the first time in her career, posting a very solid score of 39.050 in her debut. Although Maryland made a late push to win the meet, the Green and White held off the Terrapins for the win.
Looking Ahead: The Green and White will remain on the road for the third consecutive meet, traveling to Muncie, Ind. for a tri-meet with Ball State and Illinois State, Jan. 24. Following the competition at Ball State, the Eagles return home for a MAC dual with Northern Illinois, Jan. 30. This meet is part of the 'Beauty and the Beast' event in conjunction with the wrestling team.
