YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
Behind another solid performance from both Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) and Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - Univ. of Leuven), the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team  wrapped up their first trip to the Virginia Invitational Saturday, Sept. 26. Overall, the Eagles placed sixth of 15 teams, and had four harriers within the top-50 runners at the 5,000-meter race.

Similar to earlier races this season, the team was led by McDermitt, the 20th-place finisher in 17:48.3, and Gallein, who crossed the finish line in 17:51.2 and placed 24th. Transfer Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia), whom is expected to have a significant impact on the team, continues to impress early in the season. She placed 31st with a time of 18:05.1 in her second race as an Eagle. Freshman Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) continues to make significant contributions as well, completing the race in 18:31.8 and finishing 48th. One of the team captains, Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. - Saline), followed Meyers, placing 69th in 19:07.2. The next two Eagle finishers were Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm) and Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran), both of whom crossed the finish line in under 20 minutes. Anna Aldrich (Fremond, Ind. - Fremont), another of the team captains, made her season debut, crossing the finish line in 20:40.1. Rounding out the Eagles was Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. - Penn), finishing in 21:15.6.

While the performance was not what Head Coach Sue Parks was looking for, there is still plenty to take away from the event. When discussing the result, Parks stated "Our finish was disappointing. It was not the kind of performance that we were looking for.  As a team, we did not get out well at the beginning and it was difficult to move up on the hilly, wet course. I thought that freshman, Sydney Meters, had a strong race but she was the only real highlight. It was a wake up call for us but this is a talented team and I'm confident that we'll bounce back stronger from this experience. We hope to be much more ready to compete at Notre Dame next weekend."

The Eagles continue their 2015 season next Friday, Oct. 2, at the Notre Dame invitational in South Bend, Ind.
