SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — Fresh off a race in Virginia, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team was back on the course at the 2015 Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, Oct. 2. Overall, nearly every Eagle harrier improved their top 5K times of the season.
Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - Univ. of Leuven) led the Eagles with a time of 17:06.8, placing her 25th in the talented field of runners. Gallein's time was nearly 40 seconds faster than her previous season-best in the 5,000-meter. Only ten seconds behind her was Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison), who finished in 17:16.7 and placed 36th. Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) continued her trend of finishing amongst the top Eagles, as she posted a 71st place finish in 17:38.6. Bogdanova also shaved off some time from her top 5K this season, running 27 seconds faster than last week. Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) continued her impressive freshman season, crossing the finish line in 17:58.2 and taking 98th-place. Her season-best 5K time improved by 33 seconds as well. Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. - Saline), Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran), and Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. - Fremont) posted times of 18:22.6, 19:06.4, and 19:57.2, respectively. All three harriers improved their season-best times by more than 38 seconds.
Head Coach Sue Parks briefly discussed the race, stating "I was encouraged by our performance. It was a big improvement over our last meet. We were not at full strength today but the top five ran solid. A couple of the girls didn't get out as fast as they needed to but overall, I was pleased with our race and where we are at this point in the season. I'm looking forward to the next two weeks of training before our next meet."
The Eagles have another weekend off, followed by a trip to Louisville, Ky. for the Pre-National Invitational, Oct. 17. With the EMU Fall Classic being the following weekend, Oct. 23, the Green and White are fast approaching the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 31.
