Men's Golf Starts Strong at Golfweek Challenge

BURLINGTON, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team shot an opening round four-over-par 292 and is in seventh place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge Friday, Sept. 25. The event is being played at the par 72, 7,223-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Club.
Senior Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) shot an under-par round of 68 and is tied for fifth place individually. The Caledonia, Mich. native is two strokes behind a foursome that sit on top of the leaderboard with a 66.
Junior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.) is tied for 24th place with opening round 73. Reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) is tied for 31st at 74 and junior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) is tied for 55th after a 77 on Friday. Rounding out the EMU lineup, junior Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) posted a 78 and resides in a tie for 60th.
North Carolina State leads after the first round, shooting a 19-under-par 269. Charleston Southern is in second place followed by Iowa (284), SMU (289), VCU (290) and Kansas State (290).
The tournament features 15 teams from 15 different conferences, and receives national exposure through Golfweek Magazine and Golfweek.com.
The second round of action at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge resumes Saturday with a 9 a.m. (CT) tee time off of holes No. 1 and No. 10. Play concludes Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live stats are available at golfstat.com.
