The Eagles are set to resume racing following a weekend free of competition
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Fresh off of a short break, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team is getting set to race in the Virginia Invitational Saturday, Sept. 26, in Earlysville, Va. This marks the first time that the team will attend the race, as well as the first time the 2015 squad will race outside of the state of Michigan.
Last time out, the Green and White raced to a first-place team finish in the George Dales Invitational against Western Michigan University. Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) led the pack, crossing the finish in 20:54.24 for a second-place finish. Rounding out the top-five finishers were Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - Univ. of Leuven), Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia), and Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm), all finishing the race in less than 22 minutes. Freshman Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) continued to have a strong first-year, as she finished in seventh place with a time of 22:11.75.
Head Coach Sue Parks was excited for the opportunity to continue to improve in a new environment. When discussing the upcoming race, she stated "We are excited to head to Virginia to face some teams from different regions. The host school (UVA) along with Furman, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, and Wake Forest all look to be strong in this meet. Our goal is to improve on our performances in our first two meets and hopefully, mix it up with the top teams. It will be fun to go to a new meet and see some teams that we don't usually race. Training has been going very well and we're anxious to get out there and race again."
Other schools at the race include No. 16 Virginia, Auburn, Bowling Green, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Furman, High Point, Hofstra, Liberty, Morehead State, Oklahoma, Radford, Wake Forest, and Yale. The 5K women's race is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. and will take place at Panorama Farms.
