YORKTOWN, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) fired a scorching six-under par 66, the lowest round in school history and the low round of the tournament, to capture medalist honors with a career-best 211 (74-71-66) at the Cardinal Classic Tuesday, Sept. 22. The individual title is the second of her career and the first by an Eagle since Murphy rallied from nine strokes back to win the Nittany Lion Invitational with a 218 (77-73-68), Oct. 5, 2014.
As a team, the Eagles finished in second place with a two-day total of 880 (301-293-286) on the par 72, 6,204-yard Players Club course. EMU's final round tally bettered the previous program-low of 290 at the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 8-9, 2007, by four strokes. Meanwhile the 54-hole tally also eclipsed the previous low of 884 (297-293-294) at the Westbrook Invitational, Feb. 26-27, 2012.
Murphy notched seven birdies during Tuesday's round for the best 18 and 54-hole totals in program history. Her 66 bested the previous mark of 67 set by Catherine Fortin at the Rocket Fall Classic, Sept. 24, 2005. Meanwhile, the 211 was three strokes better than Fortin's three-round tally of 214 (71-71-72) at the Shootout at the Legends, Oct. 8-9, 2007.
Eastern Kentucky's Amanda Lindahl (-1) was runner up and one of three Colonels to place in the top five.
Sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) equaled her career-best with a 222 (76-72-74) in 12th-place. Redshirt senior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) notched a personal-best round of 68 to move up 15th with a 224 (78-78-68).
