EMU Women's Golf Leads 2015 MAC Fall Preview After Day One

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team leads the 2015 MAC Fall Preview by one stroke over the University of Toledo and the University of Akron following the opening two rounds of play at Purgatory Golf Club Sunday, Oct. 11. The tournament is being held at the site of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship.
The Eagles fired a first round score of 299 before tallying a 299 on the second 18 to finish with an opening day score of 598. Mid-American Conference foes UT and UA follow at 599 while Ball State (601) and Western Michigan (608) round out the top five. Nine MAC schools are in the field this week along with four other teams.
Playing on her birthday, EMU freshman Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) shot an opening round score of 78 before carding a season-best 70 to finish tied for fourth with Ball State's Sydney Anderson at 148. The Zips' Frida Fougberg paced the field with a three-under par 141 (69-72) for a five stroke advantage.
Sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) topped the rest of the Eagles finishers during the first day of competition with a two-round score of 149 (76-73), tied for sixth-best overall. Junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) is tied for 15th after posting a 151 (76-75) while redshirt senior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman-Toledo) managed a 154 (73-81) in 27th. Redshirt senior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) rounded out the lineup with rounds of 74 and 81 for a 155 in 35th-place.
Playing as an individual and making her EMU debut will be redshirt junior Essence Biggs (Beverly Hills, Mich.-Birmingham Seaholm-Seminole State) improved in her second round to finish the day in 48th with a 160 (82-78).
The Eagles return to the course Tuesday, Oct. 12, for the final round of play. Shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. Fans can follow all the action live on golfstat.com.
