NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind the solid play of redshirt senior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman-Toledo), junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne), the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished in a two-way tie for second place at MAC Fall Preview with a 54-hole mark of 907 (299-299-309) Monday, Oct. 12, on the par-72 Purgatory Golf Club course.
Stephens posted the lowest three round tally of her career with a 227 (73-81-73) to claim a tie for 12th. The top 15 showing was also her first in 16 career events as her previous best was in 2012 when she took 22nd at the Mid-American Conference Championship before transferring from the University of Toledo.
Murphy and Beck posted a two-day total of 229 in 15th place, making EMU one of just five teams in the tournament to boast a multiple top 15 finishers.
Toledo captured its second consecutive tournament title with a 897 (302-297-298) to finish 10-stroke ahead of host EMU and Western Michigan (300-308-299=907). Akron (300-299-313) finished in third place while the Zips claimed a shot win over UT's Morgan Salm.
The event featured nine MAC teams in addition to four programs from outside the league and was played on the same course that will host the league's championship in the spring.
Freshman Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) finished the event with a 230 (78-70-82) for a 19th place tie. Redshirt senior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) fired a 78 in the final round to tie for 28th place with a 233 (74-81-78).
Playing as an individual, redshirt junior Essence Biggs (Beverly Hills, Mich.-Birmingham Seaholm-Seminole State) notched a 244 (82-78-84) to take 51st place in her first collegiate tournament.
Eastern Michigan continues its fall campaign at the Blue Raider Invitational, Oct. 19-20, hosted by Middle Tennessee State University.
