EMU's Assistant Soccer Coach Joe Malachino was 1-of-4 members of the 2015 class
PONTIAC, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Assistant Soccer Coach Joe Malachino was named a member of the 2015 Michigan Bucks Hall of Fame Class. Malachino is the first Bucks player and coach to be inducted into the Bucks Hall of Fame. Others joining Malachino in the class were Steve Clark, Gary Parsons and Kenny Uzoigwe.
Malachino was an original Michigan Buck in 1996 while also a member of the Detroit Rockers indoor team. "Jumpin' Joe," as he was affectionately known, played the first two seasons for the Bucks in 1996 and 1997 and moved on to pursue professional opportunities elsewhere. He rejoined the Bucks in 2000 as player and coach helping the Bucks make history. Malachino led the Bucks to their first ever Premier Development League (PDL) Regular Season Championship and to the team's first ever PDL National Final in 2000. Although the host Bucks lost 1-0 in the title match, Malachino did enough that year to earn PDL Coach of the Year. While many were impressed with his PDL record in 2000, most of the nation learned about Malachino as he led the Bucks into Foxboro Stadium with a young group of college players and walked out as the first amateur team to defeat a MLS team in the history of the US Open Cup. He did not stop there, leading the team against the Miami Fusion of MLS two weeks later. Malachino would return as player coach in 2001 and led the team back into Foxboro Stadium for an Open Cup rematch against the Revolution for the second year in a row.
The EMU soccer team begins their 2015 campaign Sunday, Aug. 16, with an exhibition matchup against Oakland University at 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
