Eagles Drop Second-Straight Decision to Ohio, 10-3

Senior John Rubino matched the single season stolen base record in the fifth inning against the Bobcats
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a second-straight decision to Ohio University by a final score of 10-3 on Saturday afternoon, May 9, at Oestrike Stadium. Senior John Rubino matched the single season stolen base record with his 32nd steal of the season in the fifth inning against the Bobcats (29-18, 14-9 MAC).
The Eagles collected 11 hits in the contest, led by Rubino, John Montgomery, Mitchell McGeein, and David Lett who each recorded two hits apiece. Rubino and Adam Dennison both drove in a run for the Green and White. Ohio's offense was paced by leadoff hitter, Manny DeJesus who finished with three hits while John Adryan recorded two hits and drove in four runs for the Bobcats.
Senior Jake Andrews took the loss on the mound for the Eagles (18-31, 8-15 MAC). Andrews (2-6) allowed five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out a pair in 2.2 innings pitched. Connor Sitz (6-1) recorded the victory for Ohio after allowing just one run on eight hits in six innings. Kyle Huckaby, Augie Gallardo, and Devon Bronson each recorded a scoreless appearance in relief for EMU.
The Bobcats raced out to an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning for the second consecutive game. Cody Gaertner's two-run double with two outs gave the Bobcats the early two-run lead.
Ohio extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the third on the strength of John Adryan's three-run homer over the left center field wall. The Bobcats then pushed their advantage to 7-0 on Mitch Longo's two-run blast to right in the top of the fourth.
After the Bobcats added three more runs in the top of the fifth, the Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the bottom half to make it a 10-1 contest. David Lett came around to score on a wild pitch after reaching base on a hit and then advancing to third on another single off the bat of Rubino. Rubino matched the single season stolen base record for the Eagles in the frame when he swiped third for his 32nd stolen base of the season. The senior is now tied with Kyle Rhoad who recorded 32 stolen bases during the 2009 season.
Dennison's RBI ground out put another run on the board for the Green and White in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to eight, 10-2. Montgomery came around to score after beginning the inning with a walk.
The Eagles added their third run of the game in the last inning as Rubino drove a fly ball deep into center field for a sacrifice fly to plate Luke DeVenney. The one run was all the Green and White could manage in the final inning as the Bobcats recorded the final out to record the 10-3 victory in game two of the weekend series.
Eastern Michigan and Ohio will conclude the three-game Mid-American Conference series Sunday afternoon, May 10, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles will show support of Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing pink in their uniforms as fans are encouraged to wear pink as well. All mothers in attendance will also be honored during the game for Mother's Day.
