Senior John Rubino recorded his 33rd stolen base of the season in the first inning against the Bobcats
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – On a day when senior John Rubino set the single season record for stolen bases, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 10-2 decision to Ohio University in the series finale on Mother's Day, May 10, at Oestrike Stadium. With the defeat, the Eagles fall to 18-32 overall and 8-16 in the MAC while the Bobcats improve to 30-18 overall and 15-9 in conference play.
The Eagles collected five hits in the contest, led by a 2-for-3 performance from Jordan Peterson. Rubino, Jackson Martin, and Tony DiLeo also reached base via a base knock for the Green and White. Adam Dennison and Michael Mioduszewski did not record a hit in the game, but each drove in a run for the Eagles.
Sophomore Sam Delaplane made his first start of the season on the bump for the Eagles. Delplane (5-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in five innings pitched while striking out a pair. Tom Colletti picked up the victory in relief of starter Jake Rudnicki for the Bobcats. Colletti (4-2) tossed a scoreless 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Logan Cozart picked up his second three inning save of the weekend to improve on his Ohio single season record with 11.
Rubino singled in the first inning to extend his reached base streak to 25 games. The senior then swiped second base to set the new single season stolen base record in EMU laurels. Rubino's 33rd stolen base of the season put in him sole possession of the record after he tied Kyle Rhoad's previous mark of 32 steals during the 2009 season in yesterday's game.
After a scoreless two frames, the Bobcats cracked the scoreboard in the third inning with three runs on three hits to take a 3-0 lead. The Green and White answered, however, with a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mioduszewski. John Montgomery came around to score to make it a 3-1 game after walking earlier in the frame and then advancing to third on a Peterson double.
Dennison's RBI groundout in bottom of the fourth drove in Martin to cut the Eagles' deficit down to one, 3-2. Martin led off the inning with a single into center field and then moved to third base on a throwing error from the pitcher on a David Lett bunt.
Neither team could manage to push across any more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to keep it a 3-2 game. Following a 1-2-3 top of the seventh for the Bobcats, the game was put into a delay for two hours because of inclement weather in the area.
Ohio tacked on seven runs on five hits in the top of the ninth to grab a 10-2 advantage over the Eagles.
Just as he did Friday night, Cozart tossed a perfect three innings out of the bullpen following the delay to close out the 10-2 victory for the Bobcats and record his 11th save of the season.
Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond Monday, May 11, as the Eagles will host Oakland University in a make-up contest at Oestrike Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Golden Grizzlies.
