Re-Listen to the Game.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite trailing by five runs in the eighth inning, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team came from behind to capture a 11-10 victory in 13 innings over Oakland University Monday, May 11, at Oestrike Stadium.  The Eagles (19-32) got a bases loaded walk from pinch hitter Tony DiLeo in the 13th inning to record the victory over the Golden Grizzlies (10-35).

The Eagles collected 13 hits in the contest, led by a career-high three hit performance from freshman Luke DeVenneyJohn Rubino, Jordan Peterson, and David Lett also recorded multiple hit performances for the Green and White.  Lett matched a season-high with three RBI in the contest as well while Rubino extended his reached base streak to 26 straight games with a first inning walk.    Robby Enslen led the Oakland offense with three hits and three RBI.

Junior Austin Wilson recorded his first collegiate win on the mound after starting the game in center field.  Wilson (1-1) pitched a hitless two innings, allowing just one walk and striking out three.  Tyler Palm was saddled with the loss for the Golden Grizzlies.  Palm (0-2) allowed two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Golden Grizzlies opened the scoring with a pair of first inning runs to take an early 2-0 lead.  Zach Sterry plated Mike Brosseau with a two-out double to left for the first run of the contest.  Sterry then came around to score on an Eagle throwing error to give Oakland a two-run advantage.

EMU got one of the runs back, however, in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit in half.  DeVenney scored the Eagles first run on a balk after reaching base on a leadoff single to begin the frame to make it a 2-1 game.

The Eagles knotted the score at two runs apiece with a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the second.  Wilson got things started with a double into the right center field gap and then came around to score on a Lett RBI single up the middle in the ensuing at-bat.

Oakland regained the lead in the top of the fourth as the Golden Grizzlies scored three runs on three hits to take a 5-2 lead.  The Green and White inched closer in the bottom half as Michael Mioduszewski singled to begin the inning and then advanced to second on a stolen base.  Following a hit batter, Mioduszewski stole third and then scooted home as the catcher threw the ball into left field to make it a two-run contest, 5-3.

Oakland continued to put runs on the board as the Golden Grizzlies tacked-on solo runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to take an 8-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the eighth.

The bats came alive for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth before the rain came.  Four-straight hits to begin the frame plated a pair of runs for the Green and White.  Rubino's RBI triple to right center field scored DeVenney who doubled to begin the inning.  Rubino came around to score on an RBI single to left center field off the bat of John Montgomery.  Following a Jackson Martin walk to load the bases later in the frame, Adam Dennison singled through the right side to cut the deficit down to two, 8-6.   Following Dennison's RBI single, the game was put into a rain delay with the bases loaded for the Eagles.

After the teams waited out a 2:25 delay, the Eagles continued right where they left off.  Following a fielder's choice, Lett lofted a ball over the first baseman's head for a double to score Dennison and Martin. The right fielder threw the ball into second base to try to get Lett, which allowed Wilson to come around from third to score the go ahead run and give the Green and White a 9-8 lead.

Oakland was able to tie the game in the ninth, however, as Andre Sopena scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt DiLeo after leading off the inning with a double.

Following a scoreless 10th, the Golden Grizzlies took the lead on a DiLeo RBI single to score Jake Morton who tripled off the wall in right field to begin the frame.  However, the Green and White answered with a run in the bottom half to send the game to the 11th inning.  Jordan Peterson drove in Rubino with a sacrifice fly after Rubino walked and stole second and third earlier in the frame to knot the score once again, 10-10.

The game remained deadlocked at 10 until the bottom of the 13th inning.  After loading the bases on a base hit, throwing error, and intentional walk, head coach Mark Van Ameyde sent DiLeo to plate.  DiLeo did not have to take the bat off his shoulders as the junior watched four balls to bring in DeVenney for the walk-off victory.

Eastern Michigan returns to action Tuesday evening, May 12, when the Eagles make the short trip to Ann Arbor for a matchup with the University of Michigan.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium at the Wilpon Complex.  Fans that cannot attend the game can listen live on the airwaves of Eagle All-Access free of charge.
