The RedHawks pounded out 17 runs on 18 hits to defeat EMU in game two of the weekend series
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 17-6 decision to Miami University in game two of the three-game weekend MAC series Saturday, May 2, at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The RedHawks (10-34, 8-12 MAC) recorded season-highs in both runs and hits to set up a rubber match against the Eagles (18-28, 8-12 MAC) tomorrow afternoon.
Eastern Michigan scored six runs on eight hits, led by two-hit performances from Jordan Peterson, John Montgomery, and Austin Wilson. Peterson matched a season-high with three RBI while David Lett finished 1-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in for the Eagles. Wilson and Adam Dennison each scored two runs in the contest. Matt Honchel and Scott Slappey combined to drive in nine runs for the RedHawks while Jake Romano scored five times.
Senior Ryan Lavoie took the loss on the mound for the Green and White. Lavoie (2-5) lasted just 1.0+ innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Jacob Banks collected the victory for the RedHawks. Banks (3-7) allowed four runs on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched while recording one strikeout.
The RedHawks raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff hit by pitch, Jake Romano doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Matt Honchel then delivered a two-run single through the right side to put the first runs off the game on the board.
Miami kept the bats rolling in the bottom of the second, extending its lead out to 5-0. Four-straight hits to begin the frame, including a pair of triples, plated three runs and forced Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde to go to the bullpen. Brent Mattson checked into the contest and kept the RedHawks off the scoreboard the remainder of the inning.
Eastern scored its first run of the game in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit down to four, 5-1. After walking to begin the frame, Tony DiLeo moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Wilson. DiLeo then advanced 90-feet on his fifth stolen base of the season and came around to score the Eagles first run after a throwing error from the shortstop allowed Lett to reach. Lett was credited with an RBI on the play.
Miami's offense continued to click, as the RedHawks added another run in the third inning and two more in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead out to seven runs, 8-1.
The Eagles answered a pair of RedHawk runs in the bottom of the sixth with three runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 10-4. Austin Wilson's RBI single through the box got things going for the Eagles as he scored Brennan Williams who walked to begin the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt from Lett to put runners on second and third, Peterson drove another single into center field to bring in Dennison and Wilson. A John Rubino walk kept the inning alive and also made it 21-straight games the senior had reached base. However, a Montgomery ground out ended the Eagles threat.
Miami tacked on six runs on a pair of home runs in the bottom of the seventh to open up a 16-4 lead. Scott Slappey delivered the big hit of the frame with a grand slam over the left center field wall for the RedHawks.
EMU added two runs in the top of the eighth, scoring both with two outs. Dennison reached base on a catcher's interference and then a Wilson double down the left field line put runners in scoring position for the Eagles. Back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Lett and Peterson scored Dennison and Wilson to make it a 16-6 game.
After adding another run in the eighth, the RedHawks closed out the 17-6 victory over the Green and White.
The Eagles and RedHawks will conclude the three-game Mid-American Conference series tomorrow afternoon, May 3. First pitch for the rubber match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
