RedHawks Take Series Finale Over Eagles, 13-5

5/3/2015 3:45:00 PM | Baseball

Senior John Rubino finished 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs in the loss

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a second-straight decision to Miami University in the Mid-American Conference series finale Sunday, May 3, by a final score of 13-5 at McKie Field at Hayden Park.  The loss drops the Eagles to 18-29 overall and 8-13 in MAC play while the victory improves the RedHawks to 11-34 overall and 9-12 in conference action this season.

Eastern Michigan scored five runs on nine hits, led by a three-hit performance from John Rubino.  Rubino extended his reached base streak to 22-games while also scoring twice and stealing four bases in the contest.  The Scottsdale, Ariz. native now has 31 stolen bases this season which puts him just one behind the all-time record of 32 stolen bases in a season which was set by Kyle Rhoad during the 2009 season.  Jordan Peterson (2-for-5), Mitchell McGeein (2-for-4), and Adam Dennison (2-for-4) also recorded multiple hits games for the Eagles.  Peterson scored two runs and also drove in a run as well.  Matt Honchel paced the RedHawks offense, going 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI.

Senior Jake Andrews was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Green and White.  Andrews (2-5) gave up five runs on just two hits while striking out four in 2.1 innings pitched.  Matthew Beaton tossed a scoreless three innings with two strikeouts out of the bullpen for Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde and the Eagles.  Ryan Powers was credited with the victory for the RedHawks.  Powers (5-7) went seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts.

A pair of RBI groundouts in the top of the first inning gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.  Peterson got things rolling by reaching base on an error from the shortstop and then moved up to third on a base hit to right center off the bat of Rubino.  Following Rubino's team-leading 28th stolen base of the season, back-to-back groundouts to second from John Montgomery and Michael Mioduszewski plated the first two runs of the contest.

The RedHawks cut into the EMU lead in the bottom of the second as Adam Yacek came around to score on a Steve Sada RBI single to make it a one-run game, 2-1.

Eastern extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the third as Peterson blasted his first home run in an Eagle uniform over the left field wall to give the Green and White a two-run lead once again.

Miami responded in the bottom of the third, however, scoring five runs on three hits and three walks to take its first lead of the game, 6-3.

Back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth plated another run for the Eagles to cut their deficit down to two, 6-4.  McGeein came around to score on a Dennison double to the left center field gap.

A two-run triple from Honchel and an RBI double from Yacek in the ensuing at-bat put three more runs on the board for the RedHawks in the bottom of the fourth to give them a five-run cushion, 9-4

Rubino manufactured a run himself in the top of the fifth to bring the Eagles within four, 9-5.  After a one-out single, the senior stole second and then came around to score on a throwing error from the catcher as he was stealing third.

The Miami offense continued to click as the RedHawks scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a two-run homer from Jacob Wolf to open up a 13-5 lead over the Eagles.

Both teams were held scoreless over the final four frames, as the RedHawks closed out the eight-run win and also claimed the series victory over the Eagles.

Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond Tuesday, May 5, when the Eagles travel to Rochester, Mich. for a non-conference matchup with Oakland University.  First pitch for the added game against the Golden Grizzlies is set for 3 p.m. at the Oakland Baseball Field.  Fans that cannot attend the game can watch the game live on ESPN3.
