Eagles Grab Extra-Inning Victory Over Miami in Series Opener

The Eagles took advantage of two errors in the 11th inning to secure a 3-1 victory
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – In its third extra-inning contest of the season, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 11th inning to beat Miami University, 3-1, in the series opener Friday evening, May 1, at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The Eagles' (18-27, 8-11 MAC) extra-inning victory snaps a seven-game losing streak to the RedHawks (9-34, 7-12 MAC).
The Eagles collected six hits in the game, led by two-hit performances from John Rubino and John Montgomery. Rubino extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games and also reached base for the 20th consecutive game. Michael Mioduszewski and Tony DiLeo also reached base via a base knock for the Green and White. Montgomery recorded the lone Eagle RBI in the contest. Matt Honchel and Adam Yacek each went 2-for-5 to lead the RedHawks offense.
Senior Charlie Land was solid on the hill for the second consecutive game. Following his first career complete game last weekend, Land took a no decision in the contest after tossing six scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out two. Sophomore Sam Delaplane picked up the victory in relief for the Eagles. Delaplane (5-2) allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts while pitching a career-high five innings out of the bullpen. Will Schierholz (1-3) was saddled with the loss for Miami.
Montgomery's RBI single in the top of the first inning gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Rubino got things going with a one-out double and moved up 90-feet on his 27th stolen base of the season. Following a strikeout, Montgomery drilled a single into left center to plate Rubino for the first run of the contest.
After the teams went scoreless over the next five frames, the RedHawks finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the score at one apiece. Ryan Elble's two-out RBI single into right field drove in Spencer Dull who doubled earlier in the frame to tie the game, 1-1.
The Eagles threatened to take the lead back in the top of the eighth, putting a pair of runners on with two outs. However, Miami closer Will Schierholz was able to get pinch hitter Brennan Williams to fly out to end the inning. The RedHawks had a chance to take the lead in the eighth inning as well. After two singles to begin the frame put runners on first and third with no outs, Miami went with another bunt but Matt Honchel was thrown out at home to keep the score deadlocked. Delaplane induced a 6-4-3 double play in the ensuing at-bat to send the game to ninth tied, 1-1.
Neither team could get anything going in the ninth and 10th innings, as the game remained tied at one until the top of the 11th. Montgomery got things rolling for the Green and White with a leadoff single and then moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Mioduszewski. Williams reached on an error from the left fielder in the next at-bat to put runners on first and second. After a Danny Kerr ground out moved both runners up 90-feet, DiLeo and the Eagles benefitted from another RedHawk error. The miscue allowed Montgomery and Williams to touch home to give Eastern a two-run advantage, 3-1.
Delaplane went back to the mound in the bottom of the 11th and was able to retire the RedHawks in order to give the Eagles their second extra-inning victory of the season.
Eastern Michigan will look to make it two-straight over Miami tomorrow afternoon, May 2, in game two of the Mid-American Conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
