Eagles Roar Back to Split Doubleheader with Oakland

4/29/2015 6:13:00 PM | Softball

Sophomore Alyssa Huntley pitched a complete game for her fourth win of the season

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split its final non-conference games of the 2015 season against the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University Wednesday, April 29. The Eagles (16-30) fell in a six-inning mercy in game two before coming back to defeat the Horizon League leaders 4-2 in game two.

Junior Abi Clark and sophomore Michelle Kriegshauser paced the Eagle offense with three hits apiece on the day, while Abby Davidson went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two. Kriegshauser brought in two of the Green and White's four runs in game two and Brandice Olmos drove in the final run on a single through the right side of the field. Senior Lindsay Rich (9-19) suffered the loss in game two, while Alyssa Huntley (4-1) roared back to pitch a complete game victory for EMU in game two.

Sarah Harley and Courtnee Johnson each had three hits in game one with Johnson drving in four of the Golden Grizzlies' eight runs.  In game two, Marina Salinas and Jackie Kisman had two hits apiece for OU.

Game One: Oakland 8, Eastern Michigan 0 (6 inn.)

The Golden Grizzlies opened up scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a single to shallow left center, taking the early 1-0 lead over Eastern Michigan. With two outs on the scoreboard, Johnson ripped a double to the left field wall, bringing in the runner on third for OU.

A leadoff walk proved detrimental in the bottom of the third inning when Muron advanced to second on a bunt single before stealing third and touching home on a throwing error by EMU to extend Oakland's lead to 3-0. Johnson followed the run with a single down the left field line, scoring the Golden Grizzlies second run of the inning with only one out registered. A fielder's choice with a runner on second base allowed Oakland to take the 5-0 advantage with two outs in the third inning. The Eagles used a slow roller toward second base to secure its final out of the inning before the Golden Grizzlies could push any further runs across the plate.

Kriegshauser looked to get some offense going in the top of the fourth inning with a triple over the head of OU's right fielder, but pinch runner Myranda Barnes was quickly retired on a failed suicide squeeze. The Eagles used two walks to move runners into scoring position, but a hard hit ball to the shortstop closed out the inning for the Green and White before it could push a run across the plate.

EMU generated some offense in the top of the sixth inning with two-straight singles to the left side of the field from Kriegshauser and Clark, while the two advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt. A hit to second and a fly out to center ended the inning for Eastern before they were able to push any runs across the plate heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Oakland loaded the bases on a single, walk and an EMU fielding error before a short single to the edge of the right field grass brought in an unearned run for the Golden Grizzlies. Being behind in the count did not faze Johnson as she drove a single to shallow center field, plating two runs to secure the 8-0 mercy over Eastern.

Game Two: Eastern Michigan 4, Oakland 2

Eastern lit up the scoreboard for the first time on the afternoon when Clark hit a laser to center field and Davidson singled to center, forcing an Oakland error to score Barnes from first base.

The Golden Grizzlies knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning when Salinas launched a leadoff home run over the center field wall.

A bunt single from Elaine Whitbeck lit a spark for the Green and White in the top of the fifth inning. Taylor Wagner followed the single with a walk to move Whitbeck into scoring position before Kreigshauser roped a double off the left center field fence to score two runs for the Eagles, allowing them to take the 3-1 advantage.

Oakland responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back hits to bring runners just 60 ft. from home for Muron, who ripped a double to center field to score one run for the Golden Grizzlies. Lucas launched the ball home to throw out a sliding Kisman at home, allowing EMU to keep a one-run advantage heading into the sixth inning.

Duffy led off the sixth inning with a walk and pinch runner Angel Schilke advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Schilke moved to third on a Davidson single to the edge of the center field grass and crossed home on a well place single through the right side of the field by Olmos.

Huntley and the rest of the Eastern Michigan defense sat Oakland down in order in the bottom half of the inning to take the 4-2 win in the bottom half of the doubleheader.

The Eagles will be back in action Friday, May 1 when they return to Varsity Field to take on Bowling Green State University. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
