The Eagles used a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Aoife Duffy to take the game two victory from the Falcons
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team used its second comeback win of the 2015 season to split with the Falcons of Bowling Green State University in Mid-American Conference play Friday, May 1.
The Eagles (17-31, 5-12 MAC) posted their most wins since the 2012 season, keeping their playoff hopes alive with its 4-3 seventh inning win over Bowling Green (19-27, 7-13 MAC). The loss marked BGSU's first seventh inning loss of the season as an Aoife Duffy fielder's choice to second base brought in the winning runs for the Green and White.
Michelle Kriegshauser, who had two multi-hit games, led EMU, totaling five hits on the afternoon, while both Abi Clark and Abby Davidson posted two hits in game two for the Green and White. In the circle Alyssa Huntley suffered the loss in game one, making her second start in as many games, while Lindsay Rich picked up her 10th win of the season in the circle, pitching all seven innings with five hits and three strikeouts.
For the Falcons, Aspen Searle notched three hits and five RBI on the afternoon, while Bowling Green totaled three home runs in the 8-2 game one victory. Eastern saw three pitchers in both games with Jamie Kertes earning both decisions after starting game one and closing game two.
Game One: Bowling Green 8, Eastern Michigan 1
Despite notching 10 hits, three of which came from Kriegshauser, the Eagles were unable to plate more than two runs in the contest. Rich and Wyman also posted multi-hit contests for the Green and White with two apiece, while Huntley (4-2) suffered the loss in the circle.
Bowling Green also notched 10 hits in the contest, including three home runs to grab the game one win. Searle drove in five RBI for the Falcons with two hits, while Dillow also had two hits for BGSU.
Eastern Michigan used three singles in the bottom of the second to load the bases with only one out on the board. The Falcons used a hard hit ball to second to record an out at the plate and a fly ball to left field to close out the inning before the Eagles could secure an early lead.
Bowling Green mimicked EMU's second inning, loading the bases with two outs, using one walk and two singles through the left side of the field. A slow roller down the first base line notched the final out of the inning for the Green and White with the score still tied at 0-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
BGSU lit up the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when Kayla Koch ripped a home run over the center field wall to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead over EMU. Bowling Green put a runner on first with a single up the middle before Searle laced the second homer of the inning just over the right center field wall to extend the lead to 3-0 and force an Eagle pitching change. Minsker came in to retire three-straight, closing out the inning with Bowling Green leading, 3-0.
The Green and White looked to get on the scoreboard for the first time in the contest when Jenn Lucas led off with a walk and Kriegshauser picked up her second hit of the day with a single through the right side of the field. The two advanced 60 ft. on a BGSU miscue with one out, but two quick outs finished the inning before Eastern could light up the board.
The Falcons used two walks and a fielder's choice to load the bases for the second time in the contest before a Searle triple that landed on the right field line tacked on three runs for Bowling Green in the sixth inning.
Eastern finally opened up scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rich reached on a single through the left side of the field and pinch runner Myranda Barnes came around to score on a hard hit ball to the shortstop as the Eagles trailed 6-1 heading into the seventh.
Bowling Green added a seventh run in the top of the seventh when Evangelista launched the third round-tripper of the game for the Falcons. BGSU plated one final run on a double steal with runners on first and third to take an 8-1 advantage into the bottom half of the seventh inning.
A leadoff double from Kriegshauser came around to score when Wagner grounded out to third base, bringing Eastern within six with only one out to work with in the final inning. Bowling Green retired the final out to take the game one win over EMU.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan 4, Bowling Green 3
Bowling Green was the first to get on the scoreboard in game two when it used an error to put runners on second and third before a fielder's choice bunt followed by an error allowed two runs to cross the plate on the same play.
Eastern Michigan put its first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Lucas walked before making her way to second base on a throwing error by the BGSU catcher. Lucas used a delayed steal to take third base and touched home on a ball that Davidson laced through the left side of the field, bringing the Eagles within one of the Falcons.
The Green and White juiced the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for Taylor Wagner. The sophomore catcher was unable to drive in a run as the Eagles headed into the final inning trailing BGSU, 2-1.
The Falcons took a two-run advantage with a Searle single to lead off the inning before the shortstop made her way to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Searle touched home when Evangelista single up the middle as Bowling Green took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
A single to right field from Kriegshauser and Clark getting hit by a pitch put the tying runs on base for the Green and White before Rich hit a slow roller on the first base line to load the bases for the Eagles with no outs in the seventh inning. Lucas drove line shot just over the bag at third base to bring in one run for EMU as they trailed by just one with no outs and bases loaded. The Falcons notched two-straight outs with a strikeout and a play at the plate.
Duffy stepped in to pinch hit and knocked a slow dribbler to second base in which the Falcons tried to go to two and did not record the out, while two runs crossed the plate, allowing Eastern Michigan to take the 4-3 win.
The Eagles will take on the Rockets of the University of Toledo Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. on Varsity Field.
