EMU fell 3-2 to the Broncos in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell in its series finale with the Broncos of Western Michigan, 3-2, in a Mid-American Conference contest Sunday, April 26.

The Eagles (15-29, 4-11) posted six hits on the afternoon with Michelle Kriegshauser and Elaine Whitbeck each nabbing two hits apiece for the Green and White. Senior Jenn Lucas and sophomore Taylor Wagner each lined one hit for EMU. In the circle, freshman starter Trisha Trujillo suffered the loss, tossing 1.2 innings before Alyssa Huntley hurled 4.1 innings of relief.

The Broncos (20-21, 10-6 MAC) had seven hits, all from different players, while Ivy Schaaf, Melissa Palmer and Sabrina Gamboa all drove in one run for WMU. Anissa Sanchez pitched 4.1 innings for the win, while Allyson Kus nabbed the save with 2.2 innings of relief work.

Western led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk issued to Schaaf before she stole second and came around to score on a Palmer double to left center field. With Palmer on third, Gamboa dug in with two outs and roped a single to the center field grass to extend the WMU lead to 2-0.

Four-straight hits in the bottom of the second allowed Western to take a 3-0 lead and force an EMU pitching change. Huntley came in and forced an easy pop up to close out the inning before any further runs were plated.

Whitbeck's single in the top of the third inning lit an offensive spark for the Eagles as Lucas singled to center field with two outs, scoring the Green and White's first run of the game. Again, Whitbeck got the EMU offense started in the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line and again

Lucas pushed her across the plate with a suicide squeeze back to the pitcher.

Eastern was unable to generate any further offense, falling to the Broncos in a 3-2 decision and closing out its 2015 MAC road slate.

The Green and White will conclude its 2015 regular season road schedule Wednesday, April 29 when it takes on Oakland University in a non-conference contest in Rochester, Mich.
